Abstract

This study evaluates the efficacy of Task-Based Learning (TBL) in enhancing students’ English speaking proficiency, particularly in delivering procedure texts, and identifies the most pronounced pronunciation improvement. Conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Cikakak, ninth-grade students were randomly assigned to an experimental class using TBL or a control class receiving conventional instruction. The speaking assessment evaluated fluency, accuracy, pronunciation, and idea organization. This study addresses the research gap by analyzing pronunciation aspects, unlike previous studies that focused solely on TBL for teaching procedure texts at the junior high school level. The experimental class showed a substantial improvement, with a mean score surge from 57.80 to 80.50, while the control class experienced only a modest improvement from 55.67 to 62.33. The N-Gain score of 51.94 for the experimental group was effective, while the control group’s gain of 14.06 was ineffective. Statistical tests confirmed a significant disparity between the groups. Students also showed a favorable response to the TBL method, supporting the assertion that TBL effectively enhances speaking skills and engages students in learning.

Abstract

The principal purpose of this study was to find out; (1) Is there students interested in watching Harry Potter and philosopher’s stone by J.K rowling movie (X) in their listening comprehension (Y), (2) Is there any correlation between students‘ interested in watching Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone by J.K Rowling movie (X) to listening comprehension (Y). It was carried out to the class XI Science students of SMA Mutiara Palabuhanratu. In this research, a quantitative method is used with the Pearson product moment correlation study to answer the research problem. The population of this research is the students of SMA Mutiara Palabuhanratu class XI IPA for the academic year 2021/2022, totaling 30 students. The sample used is the total population. Tests and questionnaires were used to collect data. After getting the data, the researcher corrected and analyzed the test results. Data analysis using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The results of the study indicate that the level of significance between the variables X and Y based on the results of the correlation value above rcount = 0.481 rtable (5%) (df = n-2 = 30-2 = 28) rtable = 0.374. So it is clearly stated that rcount is higher than rtable or 0.05 <0.374. The result of the correlation coefficient between the two variables is 0.481. That result indicated that there was a medium correlation between students’ interested s in watching Harry Potter movie and their listening comprehension. This statement was proved based on the result rxy was higher than the rtable (0,481 ≥ 0,374 in significant level 5%) it showed that the null hypothesis (Ho) “There is no relationship between students’ interested in watching Harry Potter movie and their listening comprehension” is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1), “There is a positive relationship between students’ interested in watching Harry Potter movie and their listening comprehension” is accepted.

Abstract

This research was about the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension of narrative text. The purpose of this research is to find out is there any significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension of narrative text at eighth grade in SMPN 2 Simpenan? And how is students’ vocabulary mastery into reading comprehension of narrative text at eighth grade in SMPN 2 Simpenan? This type of research is correlation research with quantitative methods. The sample in this research was class VIII (a) with 30 students. In analyzing the data, researchers used Pearson Correlation to determine the relationship between students’ vocabulary mastery and students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. The research findings showed that the sig value (2-tailed) of 0,000 < 0.05, then between students' vocabulary mastery and students' reading comprehension of narrative text are correlated and the Pearson Correlation value of the two variables is 0.792. In conclusion, r count of 0.792 > 0.05 is obtained, which means H(a) is accepted and H(o) is rejected. So the hypothesis states that there is a correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension of narrative text at eighth grade in SMPN 2 Simpenan. Here are some suggestions, English teachers should support students with various methods or strategies that can increase students' vocabulary mastery to improve their reading comprehension, and students should practice a lot to master vocabulary, because vocabulary is one of the very important components in the teaching and learning process.
