Abstract

East Kalimantan is one of the regions that cultivates red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) in large quantities due to its promising health benefits. The peel of red dragon fruit has antioxidant activity comparable to its flesh, yet it is rarely utilized and often discarded as organic waste. This study aims to explore the potential of water and ethanol extracts from red dragon fruit peel as antioxidant sources that can serve as natural reducing and stabilizing agents in the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Extraction using water and ethanol solvents was conducted to analyze the antioxidant compounds in the peel. The extract with the strongest antioxidant activity was used for AgNP biosynthesis, and the absorption peak was observed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a specific wavelength of 400–450 nm, which is characteristic of AgNP surface plasmon resonance. The results showed that the ethanol extract exhibited stronger antioxidant potential based on its lower IC₅₀ value and functioned effectively as a reducing and stabilizing agent at synthesis temperatures of 40–50°C, without degrading the extract's secondary metabolites. These findings support the utilization of red dragon fruit peel as a sustainable and eco-friendly raw material for the development of health-related products.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Natural ingredients containing antioxidant compounds can be made in the form of a peel-off gel mask which can help care for facial skin. Butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea L.) contain flavonoid anthocyanin compounds which can break the chain reaction of free radicals. The aim of this research is to determine the antioxidant activity of butterfly pea flower extract and the preparation of butterfly pea peel off gel mask. The peel off gel mask formulation uses butterfly pea flower extract with a concentration of 5%. Testing for antioxidant activity uses the DPPH method. Physical characteristics assessment includes organoleptic tests, homogeneity observations, spreadability tests, viscosity tests, drying time tests, and preparation pH tests. Based on the research results, the IC50 value of telang flower extract is 43.68 ppm in the very strong category and the IC50 value of the peel-off gel mask preparation is 307.71 ppm in the inactive category. This research shows that the ethanol extract of butterfly pea flowers has potential as a natural antioxidant.

Abstract

Inflammation is a normal response to protect tissue injury from toxic chemicals, physical trauma, or microbial agents. Treatment of inflammation generally uses synthetic drugs, but the use of these drugs in addition to eliminating inflammation also has many side effects and is relatively expensive. Therefore, anti-inflammatory drugs derived from plants are used. One of the natural medicines used is Dayak onion (Eleutherine palmifolia) because empirically it is widely used by the Dayak and Kutai communities, which has the potential as a medicinal plant with various enormous properties. This study aimed to determine the anti-inflammatory activity of an ethanol extract of Dayak onion bulbs (Eleutherine palmifolia) in carrageenin-induced mice. The test of anti-inflammatory activity was carried out by forming artificial inflammation on the soles of the feet of white mice. The study was conducted on 15 mice, which were divided into 5 groups. The first group as a negative control was given a 0.5% CMC solution. The second group as a positive control was given diclofenac sodium at a dose of 27 mg/ 20 g BW. The third, fourth, and fifth groups were given a dayak onion bulb extract dose of 100 mg /kgBB, 200 mg /kgBB, and 400 mg /kgBB. Based on the measurement of the percent inhibition of inflammation from the 30th minute to the 300th minute, it was found that the average dose of Dayak onion extract 1 (100 mg/KgBB) had the lowest percent inhibition of inflammation, which was 23.064±1.286%, dose 2 was 37.701±2.354%, and dose 3 was 52.324±4.751% and positive control of 76.348±8.702% which has the highest percent of inflammation inhibition. Based on the study, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of dayak onion bulbs has the best anti-inflammatory activity at dose 3 of 52.324±4.751% in mice induced by carrageenin.

Abstract

Excessive oxidation reactions in the body can cause various harmful effects, mainly due to the uncontrolled production of free radicals. Antioxidant compounds are needed to protect the body from free radical attacks. One natural source of antioxidants is the tampoi fruit (Baccaurea pyriformis Gage). This fruit is known to contain metabolites such as flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, and saponins, which act as natural antioxidants. The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity of tampoi fruit peel (Baccaurea pyriformis Gage) using the DPPH method. This was an experimental study with the independent variable being ethanol extract of tampoi fruit peel and the dependent variable being antioxidant activity. The research stages included plant determination, slimpisia preparation, maceration extraction, phytochemical screening, determination of extract moisture content, and antioxidant activity testing with DPPH. The results showed a drying shrinkage of 5.6%, an extract yield of 13%, and an extract moisture content of 14.77%, which is classified as a thick extract. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. Antioxidant test results showed that tampoi fruit peel ethanol extract had an average IC value of 11.8165 ppm (very strong category), and vitamin C as a comparison had an IC value of 7.5019 ppm. Thus, tampoi fruit peel ethanol extract has strong antioxidant activity.
