Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa) is a major food commodity in Indonesia that is highly susceptible to environmental stressors, such as salinity and pyrite (FeS₂), which can inhibit its growth, particularly at the seedling stage. This study aimed to analyze the effects of salinity and pyrite on rice seedling growth, focusing on germination rate, root length, and fresh seedling weight. The research was conducted at the UPT Seed Certification and Plant Seed Certification of Food Crops and Horticulture in Pekanbaru for two months. The experimental design used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of two factors: salinity stress (3 levels: 0 mM, 50 mM, 100 mM) and pyrite stress (3 levels: 0 mg, 200 mg, 400 mg), with four replications for each treatment. The parameters observed included plant height, leaf number, root length, stomatal count, plant necrosis, and leaf area. The results indicated that salinity had a significant effect on plant height, with greater reduction observed at the 100 mM salinity concentration. Pyrite also affected leaf number and root length, although its impact was lower than that of salinity. The interaction between salinity and pyrite did not show synergistic effects, but both factors worsened the plant’s physiological condition. The combination of high salinity and high doses of pyrite caused increased leaf necrosis and a reduction in other growth parameters. In conclusion, both salinity and pyrite significantly affected rice seedling growth, and their interaction exacerbated the plant’s physiological condition. Environmental management and the selection of rice varieties tolerant to salinity and heavy metals are crucial to minimizing the negative impacts on rice growth.

Abstract

Weeds remain a persistent challenge in agriculture, significantly reducing crop productivity by competing for essential resources such as light, water, and nutrients. Although synthetic herbicides are widely used for weed control, their long-term application raises serious environmental and health concerns. As a sustainable alternative, plant-based bioherbicides that harness allelopathy—the natural chemical interactions among plants—are gaining attention. This review explores recent findings on the allelopathic potential of invasive and native plant species, focusing on key allelochemicals such as flavonoids, phenolics, and terpenoids that exhibit phytotoxic effects on weed species. Genetic factors, including specific quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and metabolic pathways involved in allelochemical production, are also discussed as critical determinants of allelopathic expression. Furthermore, environmental conditions such as temperature, soil composition, and light regimes can influence the efficacy and persistence of allelopathic compounds in the field. Understanding the synergistic interaction between genetics and environmental variables is essential for the development and optimization of effective, eco-friendly bioherbicides. This review highlights the current challenges and prospects in integrating allelopathy into weed management strategies for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

Abstract

Salinity and pyrite are abiotic stress factors that can affect the physiological quality of rice seeds. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of salinity and pyrite stress on the viability and vigor of rice seeds. The research was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors: salinity levels (0 mM, 50 mM, and 100 mM NaCl) and pyrite dosages (0 mg, 200 mg, and 400 mg). The observed parameters included germination, maximum growth potential, vigor index, growth speed, simultaneous growth, and growth rate. The results showed that salinity stress significantly affected the vigor index and growth speed, while pyrite stress only influenced the growth speed. The interaction between the two factors did not show a significant effect on all physiological quality parameters of the seeds. However, there was a tendency for a decline in germination percentage, maximum growth potential, vigor index, growth speed, and simultaneous growth. The combination of high salinity stress (100 mM) and high pyrite dosage (400 mg) caused more pronounced growth retardation, particularly after day 10. Although rice seeds were able to maintain tolerance at low to moderate stress levels, an increase in the intensity of stress from both factors could hinder water and nutrient absorption, thereby reducing overall growth performance. The findings of this study provide insights into the tolerance limits of rice seeds to salinity and pyrite stress, which can serve as a basis for managing suboptimal lands for more sustainable rice production.
