Abstract

This article discusses how VICE Indonesia, through a documentary video titled “Breaking the Chain of Sexual Violence in Islamic Boarding Schools,” addresses the issue of sexual violence in religious education environments. The researchers used Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach to examine how the language used in the video could shape public opinion. The analysis was conducted in three parts: textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. The research results show that VICE Indonesia presents the victims as the main characters who bravely speak out, and highlights the patriarchal culture as the main cause of sexual violence. This video also combines several perspectives such as law, religion, and the feminist movement to provide a broader picture of the issue. VICE Indonesia seems to support the feminist view that seeks equality between men and women, especially in Islamic boarding schools. This documentary not only criticizes religious institutions but also invites society to rethink religious values that have long been considered untouchable. This research shows that media such as documentaries can be an important tool for raising awareness and encouraging social change.

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of #JogetGemoy on TikTok as a form of politainment, where political campaigns are transformed into entertaining and emotionally engaging performances, particularly targeting Gen Z voters in Indonesia's 2024 presidential election. Utilizing Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) combined with Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, this research examines how texts, visuals, and hashtags in TikTok videos contribute to reshaping Prabowo Subianto's political image through affective and playful representations. The concept of digital heterotopia is employed to explain TikTok as an alternative public sphere in which contradictory social orders coexist, thereby normalizing a populist yet entertaining political discourse. The findings reveal that pleasure-driven visual and musical elements in #JogetGemoy content foster collective identity and reinforce positive perceptions of the candidate while obscuring policy narratives and critical debate. This politainment practice reflects a shift in political communication strategies, transforming politics from rational debate to a spectacle of pleasure and viral engagement. The study highlights how algorithmic culture, audience participation, and intertextual memes collaboratively produce an affective space of political discourse, which may have profound implications for the quality of democracy and civic engagement in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines Ngajiblox, a virtual Qur’anic study initiative organized by Mario (Majelis Roblox Indonesia) on the Roblox platform, to analyze how digital environments produce religious simulacra and hyperreal experiences. As religious practices increasingly move online, the research explores how Islamic learning, ethical conduct, and communal interaction are reconfigured in virtual space. A descriptive qualitative method with a netnographic approach was employed. Data were gathered through online observation, in-depth interviews, and content analysis, and interpreted using Jean Baudrillard’s theory of simulacra and simulation. The findings reveal that the virtual mosque functions as a socio-religious arena where Islamic practices are reconstructed through digital symbols, avatars, spatial design, and virtual artifacts. Rather than simply imitating offline gatherings, the sessions generate an autonomous religious reality in which learning and spirituality are experienced as authentic. Elements such as mosque icons, gender-segregated areas, and live broadcasts from a physical mosque in Klaten strengthen the sense of hyperreal religiosity. Participants engage in study, ethical reflection, and social interaction in ways that parallel offline life, while remaining aware of limitations such as distraction and “instant” spirituality. Islamic subjectivity thus emerges through negotiation between digital simulation and embodied faith.
