Abstract

This study aims to describe soushokukei danshi, herbivorous men who represent the value of new masculinity in the girl comic series (shoujo-manga) in Japan. They are called herbivores or plant eaters because in general, their characteristics are not as dominant as the image of nikushoku or meat-eaters that is usually attached to traditional Japanese men in a patriarchal culture. To pursue the objective of this research, qualitative descriptive method and Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) theory were used with two main data from Sakura chan and Amane kun by Asazuki Norito and Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun by Izumi Tsubaki. Through masculinity analysis using 20 standard items of the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) theory, it can be seen that the characteristics of herbivorous men can be found in many feminine male characters in shoujo-manga (girl comics), including not being aggressive, gentle, liking things usually synonymous with women such as dressing up, cooking, and liking sweet foods. The tendency of this kind of feminine male figure is even used as the main character of shoujo-manga. Its development even affects the fashion style and appearance of young people in daily life. In short, the herbivorous man can be considered as a deconstruction of the traditional Japanese salary-man hegemonic masculinity that emphasizes dominance, virility, and financial strength. Herbivorous men even gave birth to new masculinity values, as well as created a new economic market chance in men's cosmetics and goods.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the interest and motivation of nursing students in Indonesia, specifically in the Madura region, to pursue a career in Japan. Globalization and international mobility have influenced the interest of Madura residents in seeking job opportunities abroad, particularly in the Middle East. However, how do nursing graduates from Madura perceive Japan, a non-Muslim country, as a potential destination for employment. A survey and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 155 nursing students from STIKES Ngudia Husada, including alumni who have recently become nurses and are members of PPNI Bangkalan in Madura. The findings showed that the interest in working in Japan is actually quite high (82.6%), with the main motivating factors being the desire for new experiences (80%) and attractive salaries (49%). Nursing skills required to work in Japan are not a problem because the skill demands for nurses in Indonesia are actually higher. However, language barrier (83.2%), cultural differences, and adaptation issues (both 40.6%) are the main obstacles faced by nursing graduates from Madura in pursuing a career as nurses in Japan. This article proves that although Japan is still considered unfamiliar to Indonesian Migrant Workers in the Madura region, it is considered an attractive destination for nursing students, especially those from STIKES NHM Bangkalan in Madura. However, the challenges of learning the Japanese language, which uses non-alphabetic characters such as Kana and Kanji, as well as the fear of cultural shock due to different work habits and culture, are the biggest obstacles they face. Therefore, Japanese language training, cultural introduction, and understanding of the work ethic of the Japanese society are crucial in enhancing the competitiveness of Indonesian nurses who aspire to pursue a career in Japan.

Abstract

Co-dependency can occur in any kind of relationships, such as husband and wife, friends, and even parents and children. This phenomenon is being represented in media, such as movie titled Mother by Tatsushi Omori. This movie is chosen to be research object with the aim of analyzing the depiction of codependency in a single mother named Akiko and her son named Shuhei. The research used qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The results showed that despite the differences in co-dependency behaviors that Akiko and Shuhei have, there are the same goals and desires, both are equally dependent and need each other. Although Akiko is more dominant and harms Shuhei a lot, it does not make Shuhei think of leaving Akiko. The relationship between mother and son, who have always lived together and are accustomed to each other's nature, makes them even more bonded and attached which then creates a co-dependency that is difficult to end. No matter what the circumstances, these two will never want to leave each other or be left behind.

Abstract

Abstract

Garasu tenjo or the glass ceiling phenomenon refers to the imaginary glass ceiling that prevents women from reaching the top position of a company. A survey by AOL Jobs proves that one in six women face discriminations in the workplace, such as different salaries compared to male employees, less appreciation for their performance, and difficulties in getting promotion. The garasu tenjo phenomenon can be seen in Chef: Mitsuboshi no Kyushoku, a drama series about Mitsuko who experiences various obstacles in her career as a three-star chef. Cooking as unpaid labor is generally done by women but cooking as paid labor (chefs) is dominated by men, making it hard for women to strive in that field. This contradiction compelled the author to explore how garasu tenjo phenomenon is represented in the drama Chef: Mitsuboshi no Kyushoku. Using the qualitative research method and female underrepresentation theory, the scarcity of women in the field of leadership is further examined. Analysis result shows that chefs are highly patriarchal occupation with a lot of gender biases, and that women also face the hurdle of balancing work with household responsibilities.

Abstract

Indonesian Migrant Workers with tokutei ginou (specified skilled worker) visas in Japan experience problems and obstacles while working in Japan. To overcome these problems, they carry out adaptation strategies for each problem. This study aims to find out the problems of Indonesian migrant workers in Japan and how to adapt to these problems. This research is descriptive qualitative research and uses a case study approach. The objects in this research are three Indonesian Migrant Workers with tokutei ginou visas who work in the hospitality industry in Hokkaido, Japan. In collecting data, in-depth interviews were conducted. The results of this research reveal that Indonesian migrant workers experience several problems while working in Japan, such as differences in habits, work culture, language barriers, environmental conditions, absence of places of worship, and incompatibility of work contracts. From these problems, the migrant workers have ways to deal with these problems in order to adapt in Japan. Such as adjusting to the habits of Japanese society, relearning the Japanese language, familiarizing themselves with the weather conditions in Japan, and worshiping in their respective residences. It can be concluded that the adaptation strategies carried out by Indonesian migrant workers based on John William Bennett's theory are 1) adaptive behavior to adjust differences in habits; 2) adaptive strategy to deal with problems of work culture, language, environment, and religion; and 3) adaptive process to deal with work culture problems.

Abstract

The Kagura dance is a sacred, theatrical dance to entertain the Shinto gods. In several areas, including the city of Matsumae, Hokkaido island, this dance is threatened with extinction due to a lack of the next generation. Using an ethnographic approach, this research aims to describe the development of the Kagura dance and efforts to revitalize the dance amidst the aging society phenomenon that has hit Japan. The data collection techniques used were observation and in-depth interviews. Researchers observed the preparation process for the dance festival for six months and conducted interviews with Shinto priests, local Education and Culture Service employees, and hotel employees to gather data. The research results show that the potential extinction of the Kagura dance is mainly caused by the reduction in the young population because most of the population urbanizes to study and work in big cities. The revitalization strategy that has been carried out is  establishing  the  Kagura  Matsumae  preservation body which oversees the Matsumae shrine, the Kagura Kiyobe Preservation Society, the Haraguchi Preservation Society, and teaching the locality of Matsumae City from elementary to middle school students. The effort has a positive impact on student's awareness of preserving Kagura dance. Some students have joined and become the main members of the Kagura Preservation Body. Since the majority of people moved to the urban areas, the revitalization effort has not been completely successful. However, it can be seen that the city government's awareness and efforts are very high to maintain traditional culture.
