Abstract

The Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) program in Desa Mekar Mulia demonstrates the strategic role of students in advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recognizing the persistent health challenges in rural Indonesia, such as limited healthcare access and low health literacy, students implemented a community-based approach focused on SDG 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and well-being. Through a qualitative case study, this paper analyzes the effectiveness of student initiatives, including the hands-on education of making herbal balms for common ailments like bloating and joint pain, as a practical and economical solution for residents. Furthermore, students engaged in collaborative efforts with the community, such as gotong royong (mutual cooperation) for environmental sanitation and providing education on waste management and the cultivation of medicinal plants and vegetables. This holistic approach not only improved public health awareness and practices but also strengthened the bond between students and the community, highlighting KKN as a viable model for sustainable, locally-relevant development.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the potential of utilizing lemongrass (Cymbopogon nardus) as a herbal tea product in Mekar Mulio Village, Sei Balai Subdistrict, Batu Bara Regency, North Sumatra. The activity was carried out through a Community Service Program (KKN) using lecture, discussion, and hands-on practice methods. The results indicated that the community, particularly PKK and Perwiritan women’s groups, showed high enthusiasm in learning the process of processing lemongrass into herbal tea. Lemongrass tea provides various health benefits, including antioxidant activity, blood pressure reduction, sleep quality improvement, and natural antimicrobial effects. Beyond its health aspects, this innovation also creates opportunities for developing Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) based on local potential. Supporting factors include the availability of raw materials, community familiarity with lemongrass, and the growing market trend for natural herbal products. Therefore, the development of lemongrass tea serves not only as a healthy beverage alternative but also as a strategic effort to empower rural communities economically.
