Abstract

Academic anxiety can significantly impact students' mental health and well-being, leading to decreased motivation to learn. Understanding how self-affirmation can alleviate anxiety may help students manage their concerns and enhance academic performance. This study aims to examine the concept of self-affirmation, assess the levels of academic anxiety, and investigate the influence of self-affirmation on academic anxiety among students at Syiah Kuala University. Utilizing a quantitative approach with an ex post facto design, the study's population comprises students from Syiah Kuala University. Data collection employed cluster sampling, resulting in two faculties that met the sampling criteria, with a total of 368 respondents. The self-affirmation scale, which consists of 20 items and has a reliability of 0.897, and the academic anxiety scale, which contains 35 items with a reliability of 0.90, were used for data acquisition. Data analysis was conducted using correlation tests and simple linear regression. Findings indicate that the average level of self-affirmation among students falls within the moderate category, scoring 49, while the average level of academic anxiety also falls within the moderate category, scoring 87. The results from simple linear regression analysis revealed F = 8.960 with a significance level of 0.003 (p 0.005), indicating a significant effect of self-affirmation (X) on academic anxiety (Y).
