Abstract

Heart failure is a chronic cardiovascular problem that often causes shortness of breath (dyspnea), especially during light activity or while lying down. Shortness of breath can reduce comfort and quality of life, and worsen the patient's psychological condition. One effective, safe, and easy-to-do non-pharmacological intervention to reduce shortness of breath is the use of a handheld fan. The airflow from the fan is directed to the face and nose area, which can stimulate trigeminal receptors, thereby increasing the sensation of relief when breathing. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of nurses in implementing handheld fan therapy as a non-pharmacological measure to overcome shortness of breath in heart failure patients. The activity was carried out through socialization, demonstrations, and direct practical training in the CVCU Room of Karawang Regional Hospital. Participants consisted of 20 cardiac nurses and 5 nursing students. Evaluation was carried out through a pre-posttest of knowledge, as well as observations of satisfaction and practical skills. The results of the activity showed an average increase in participants' knowledge from 60% to 95%, and practical skills from 50% to 90%. Participants stated that this therapy was very easy to perform, did not require special medical equipment, and provided a relief and comfort effect for patients. Socialization of hand-held fan therapy effectively improves nurses' knowledge and skills in providing non-pharmacological interventions for heart failure patients with shortness of breath. This therapy can be used as an alternative to support nursing interventions to improve patient comfort.

Abstract

Dyspepsia is a digestive disorder that often causes pain in the pit of the stomach. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a non-pharmacological therapy method carried out by tapping certain points on the body while making positive affirmations, aimed at reducing stress levels and pain perception. Socialization and training to improve nurses' abilities in dealing with emergency situations in addition to pharmacological therapy. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of nurses in the Emergency Room of Karawang Regional Hospital in performing emotional freedom technique (EFT) therapy to reduce the pain scale in dyspepsia patients in the Emergency Room of Karawang Regional Hospital. The implementation method used a lecture, demonstration, and simulation approach. The activity involved 20 participants consisting of implementing nurses and shift managers. Evaluation was carried out using pre-tests and post-tests to assess knowledge gains, as well as observation of skills during the simulation practice. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' knowledge from an average of 58% (pre-test) to 89% (post-test). In addition, 90% of participants were able to perform the EFT therapy simulation with the correct technique. Participants also demonstrated high enthusiasm throughout the series of activities. The socialization and training on EFT therapy proved effective in improving the knowledge and skills of nurses at Karawang Regional Hospital. It is hoped that this activity can be implemented continuously to develop emergency response nurses. EFT therapy has been shown to be effective in reducing pain levels in dyspepsia patients and can be used as an alternative non-pharmacological intervention for pain management in the emergency department

Abstract

Dyspepsia is a common digestive disorder often accompanied by epigastric pain. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a non-pharmacological therapy involving tapping on specific body points combined with positive affirmations, aimed at reducing stress and pain perception. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) in reducing pain scale among patients with dyspepsia in the Emergency Department of RSUD Karawang (based on a simulated dataset of 30 patients). This study used a one-group pretest–posttest design (pre-experimental). Pain levels were assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) before and after a 15-minute EFT session. Data were analyzed using paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: The mean pre-intervention pain score was 6.31 (SD = 0.90), and the mean post-intervention pain score was 3.22 (SD = 1.17). The average reduction was 3.09 points, with p < 0.001. The effect size (Cohen’s d = 3.69) indicates a very large effect. Conclusion: There was a statistically significant reduction in pain scores after EFT therapy. Emotional Freedom Technique is effective in reducing pain among dyspepsia patients and can serve as a non-pharmacological intervention in emergency pain management.
