Abstract

Hospitalization is a stressful experience for preschool-aged children because they are unable to fully understand their illness and the unfamiliar hospital environment. This often leads to anxiety, fear, and resistance to medical procedures. One non-pharmacological approach that can help reduce children's anxiety is Brain Gym therapy, a series of simple body movements designed to balance right and left brain function and promote relaxation. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of nurses and parents in implementing Brain Gym therapy for preschool children (4 years old) to reduce anxiety caused by hospitalization. The activity method involved outreach, live demonstrations, and practical assistance for participants, consisting of pediatric nurses and patient companions in the Rawamerta Ward at Karawang Regional Hospital. Results showed an 85% increase in participants' knowledge after the outreach, and children appeared more relaxed and cooperative during medical procedures after Brain Gym implementation. This activity received a positive response from nurses and parents. Conclusion: Brain Gym therapy outreach effectively increased the understanding and skills of nurses and parents in reducing anxiety caused by hospitalization in preschool-aged children

Abstract

Cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest are emergency situations that can lead to death if not immediately provided. Basic Life Support (BLS) is the initial action that can be taken by the community to maintain life before medical personnel arrive. However, the level of community knowledge and skills regarding BLS procedures is still low, so socialization and training are needed to improve the community's ability to deal with emergency situations. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of the community in the work area of the UPTD Jatiluhur Health Center, Purwakarta Regency in performing Basic Life Support (BLS). The method of implementation of the activity used a lecture, demonstration, and simulation approach. The activity involved 40 participants consisting of the general public and health cadres. Evaluation was carried out using pre-tests and post-tests to assess knowledge gains, as well as observation of skills during the simulation practice. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' knowledge from an average score of 58% (pre-test) to 89% (post-test). In addition, 90% of participants were able to simulate chest compressions and artificial ventilation with the correct technique. Participants also showed high enthusiasm in participating in the entire series of activities. Basic Life Support (BLS) outreach and training have proven effective in improving the knowledge and skills of the community within the Jatiluhur Community Health Center (Puskesmas) work area. This activity is expected to be implemented sustainably to foster an emergency response community and reduce the risk of death due to delayed assistance

Abstract

Pneumonia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children under five years of age. This condition causes impaired gas exchange and decreased oxygen saturation. A non-pharmacological effort that can be done to improve oxygenation is Pursed Lips Breathing (PLB) therapy. In preschool children, this therapy can be modified through balloon blowing activities to make it more interesting and easier to do. To determine the effect of Pursed Lips Breathing therapy with balloon blowing modifications on oxygenation status in preschool children with pneumonia in the Rawamerta Ward, Karawang Regional Hospital. This study used a pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 16 children aged 3–6 years who met the inclusion criteria. The intervention was carried out by children inhaling through the nose and exhaling through pursed lips while blowing a balloon for 5 times per session, twice a day for three days. Oxygen saturation measurements were carried out using a pulse oximeter before and after the intervention. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon test. The average oxygen saturation value before therapy was 92.18%, and after therapy it increased to 96.50%. The Wilcoxon test showed a p-value of 0.002 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect between the application of Pursed Lips Breathing therapy, modified by blowing a balloon, and improving oxygenation status in preschool children with pneumonia. Conclusion: Pursed Lips Breathing therapy, modified by blowing a balloon, effectively improves oxygenation status in preschool children with pneumonia. This technique can be used as a simple, inexpensive, and enjoyable alternative non-pharmacological intervention for children.

Abstract

Hospitalization is a stressful experience for preschool-aged children due to limited cognitive and emotional abilities in understanding medical procedures. This condition often triggers anxiety that can affect the healing process and the child's cooperation during treatment. One non-pharmacological therapy that can help overcome anxiety is Brain Gym, a series of simple movements to stimulate the right and left brain functions, increase relaxation, and reduce emotional tension. This study aims to determine the effect of implementing Brain Gym therapy on reducing anxiety levels in preschool-aged children due to hospitalization in the Rawa Merta Ward, Karawang Regional Hospital. This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test post-test design approach. A sample of 10 preschool children (aged 4 years) who underwent hospitalization was taken using purposive sampling. Anxiety levels were measured using a child anxiety level observation sheet (modified Wong-Baker Faces Anxiety Scale) before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with a significance level of ρ <0.05. The average anxiety level of children before receiving Brain Gym therapy was 7.2 (severe anxiety category), while after the intervention it decreased to 3.8 (mild category). The Wilcoxon test showed a p-value of 0.004 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect of Brain Gym therapy on reducing anxiety levels in preschool children during hospitalization. Brain Gym therapy is effective in reducing anxiety levels in hospitalized preschool children. Nurses are advised to implement Brain Gym as a non-pharmacological intervention that is enjoyable, easy to perform, and can improve children's comfort during hospitalization
