Abstract

Better writers tend to be better readers (Stotsky, 1983 in Kroll, 1990). Dealing with this main theory, there is an assumption that many students who like reading fiction (novel/ story) in Bahasa Indonesia, they also get good marks in English writing achievements. Therefore, the researcher interested to investigate whether there is a correlation between students' reading comprehension of Indonesian fiction and their writing ability of English narrative texts. To support this research, there are some related literature and related findings dealing with this research. The research is a correlational study in ex-post facto design. Population of the research is all second grade students. And the random sampling is used to take the sample. The sample includes 42 students. Next, the data is gained through the reading comprehension test, the writing narrative test as the research instruments. The instruments are validated by trying out, consulting the advisors, and so on. The data from those instruments is analyzed by using statistical analysis, the Pearson Product Moment coefficient correlation, since it is in the form of interval data. The data is calculated by using manual calculation, calculation by using Microsoft Excel program and calculation from SPSS (Statistical Product Solution Service) version 14.0 to get valid computation in analysis. The finding of this research shows that r observes = 0.8866>r table=0.3044 at significant level 0.05 with df=40. It means that there is a significant and positive correlation between students' reading comprehension of Indonesian fiction and their writing ability of English narrative texts. In other word, the higher students' reading comprehension of Indonesian fiction tends to be the higher their writing ability of English narrative texts and vice versa. Therefore, it is recommended to students to read Indonesian fiction in order to promote their writing ability. This finding is expected 2 to be able to give much significant contribution to teachers, students, next researchers, and people who are interested in reading-writing connection.

Abstract

Recently there has been a great debate among the educators which one dominates between vocabulary mastery and content schemata to improve students’ reading comprehension. to counter this issue, this present study tries to investigate whether the combination of vocabulary mastery and content schemata are significantly related to reading comprehension, whether there is a significant relationship between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension while content schemata is held constant, and whether there is a significant relationship between content schemata and reading comprehension while vocabulary is held constant. The writer used two stages sampling technique. Two-stage random sampling is combination of cluster random sampling with individual random sampling. Therefore, 54 students out of 216 students of the eighth grade in academic year 2013/2014 were chosen. The method of the research was a correlation study. Two types of research instruments were used to collect the data. They were multiple-choice tests and questionnaire. Then the data were analyzed by multiple correlations and multiple regressions. Based on the results of the data analysis, there were three conclusions drawn: first, the combination of vocabulary mastery (X1) and content schemata (X2) are jointly related to reading comprehension (Y). Second, there is a significant relationship between vocabulary mastery(X1) and reading comprehension (Y). Third, there is a significant relationship between the content schemata (X2) and reading comprehension (Y). Based on the finding of the three test hypotheses, it was found that the test estimated regression equation on content schemata is higher than vocabulary mastery. It means that students with minimum vocabulary mastery can still comprehend a text with an appropriate content schema.

The researcher applied GBA to the experiment class, on the other hand, the control class was taught using a regular method, a method which generally consists lecturing, discussing and games without structured cycle process. The obtained data from pretest and posttest were calculated using a t-test to identify whether there is a significant difference between the test scores of both groups, experimental and control group. The analyses of students' texts presented were used to find the students' progress or improvement that the students make after implementing GBA The result of this study shows that GBA has a significant effect on students' writing ability. With a level of significance of 0.05, the value of t-test is higher than t-table. The result describes that there is a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores obtained by the experimental group. In other words, there is an effect of implementing GBA on students' writing ability. With regard to the development of students' writing abilities as shown in the texts produced by the students, the student’s writing skill were significantly improved in terms of the schematic structure and linguistic features. Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Tea Party learning model on English speaking skills. This study uses a quantitative approach, and the type of research used is experimental research. This research instrument used speaking skill test (pretest and posttest). The population of this study was the fourth-grade students of MI Darul Ulum, totalling 54 students, while the sampling technique was carried out with a saturated sample, that is, all of the population were used as samples of research. Based on the results of research and data analysis, students who were taught by applying the Tea Party learning model had an effect on the speaking skills. This can be proven by the significant level of = 0.05. From this value, it is obtained that t-count > t-table is 3,492 > 2,007, so Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted, so it can be concluded that through the application of the Tea Party learning model, students can improve speaking skills at the fourth-grade students of MI Darul Ulum.

Abstract

In the recently, students have to understand multimodal text become understanding so, probing into students' PowerPoint Slides can impact an overview of the students' multimodal literacy. To add to this body of research, the present study attempts to analyze the implementation and logical meaning of six senior high school students' PPT slides, which explain natural and social phenomena. Through the qualitative design, students' PPT focusing on the students' slides capturing the images and texts were collected. These data were analyzed using the concept of the representational meanings of images proposed by Kress & van Leeuwen, the representational meaning of text proposed by Halliday, and the logical meanings of images and text comprising status and logico-semantic relation suggested by Martinec & Salway, which are under the Approach of Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis (SF-MDA). The analysis reveals that experientially the Actional processes and the Relational Process are dominantly used in Students' PPT, and logically the complementary relation and logico-semantic of exemplification with Text more general are the most frequent logical meaning realized in Students PPT. The results offer a practical implication and suggestion for further research. The practical implication is that multimodal learning is necessary to emerge in the language instructions for scaffolding the learners' multimodal literacy. Besides, further research is recommended to investigate different and foci of analysis to develop Multimodal Discourse Analysis
