Abstract

Road pavement quality is a critical factor in supporting a country's mobility and economy. Around 40% of the road length in Indonesia suffers damage, including permanent deformation and early cracking. To overcome road damage, it is important to know the pavement quality parameters such as Voids in Mineral Aggregate (VMA), Voids in Mix (VIM), and Voids Filled with Bitumen (VFB), along with the factors that influence them, such as material characteristics. This study aims to determine the effect of the fine and coarse aggregate ratio on volumetric parameters in asphalt mixtures, including VIM, VMA, and VFB. The experimental method was carried out on four samples. Aggregate characteristic tests were carried out, including gradation tests. Volumetric tests were carried out on each sample with asphalt content of 4%, 4.5%, and 5%. The research results show that the smaller fine-to-coarse aggregate ratio would increase the VMA and VIM values and decrease the VFB value. Aggregate ratio significantly affects volumetric parameters, which shows the importance of selecting aggregate with the right size distribution and determining the right ratio to achieve optimal pavement performance. The results of this study can be used as a practical guide for optimizing asphalt mix design with better quality and durability.

Abstract

Durenan Road in Trenggalek Regency is classified as a primary arterial road that plays a critical role in inter-city connectivity but is prone to pavement deterioration due to high traffic volumes, especially from heavy vehicles. This study aims to evaluate the extent of pavement damage using the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) method and propose suitable maintenance strategies. A quantitative research approach was adopted by conducting a visual field survey along a 1-kilometer road section, divided into ten 100-meter segments. Data were collected on types of damage, severity levels, and dimensions, followed by calculations of damage density, deduct value (DV), total deduct value (TDV), and corrected deduct value (CDV) to determine the PCI for each segment. Results showed common damage types such as potholes, alligator cracking, and patching, with varying severity. The average PCI value was 52, categorized as “Fair,” while the lowest segment recorded a PCI of 22, classified as “Very Poor.” The study recommends periodic maintenance including crack sealing, pothole repair, and light overlay for deteriorated segments. Improvements to roadside drainage systems are also advised to prevent water-related damage. The PCI method proved effective in assessing pavement conditions and prioritizing road maintenance actions in a structured and data-driven manner. Abstrak Jalan Durenan di Kabupaten Trenggalek merupakan jalan arteri primer yang vital sebagai penghubung antar kota, namun mengalami kerusakan akibat tingginya volume lalu lintas, terutama kendaraan berat. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis tingkat kerusakan perkerasan jalan menggunakan metode Pavement Condition Index (PCI) serta memberikan rekomendasi penanganan yang tepat. Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kuantitatif melalui survei visual lapangan terhadap segmen jalan sepanjang 1 km yang dibagi menjadi 10 segmen, dilanjutkan dengan perhitungan Density, Deduct Value (DV), Total Deduct Value (TDV), dan Corrected Deduct Value (CDV) untuk memperoleh nilai PCI masing-masing segmen. Hasil menunjukkan jenis kerusakan dominan berupa lubang, retak acak, dan tambalan dengan tingkat keparahan bervariasi. Nilai PCI rata-rata adalah 52 yang masuk kategori “Sedang (Fair)”, dengan segmen terburuk mencapai nilai 22. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, disarankan dilakukan pemeliharaan rutin seperti penambalan, pengisian retak, dan rehabilitasi ringan berupa overlay pada segmen dengan kerusakan signifikan. Selain itu, sistem drainase juga perlu ditingkatkan untuk mencegah kerusakan berulang akibat genangan air. Metode PCI terbukti efektif dalam mengevaluasi kondisi jalan dan membantu penentuan prioritas perbaikan infrastruktur secara tepat guna.
