Abstract

This article aims to examine the dimensions of maqāṣid-based interpretation in the thought of Hasyim Asy’ari. Despite his prominence in Indonesian Islamic scholarship, Hasyim Asy’ari has seldom been examined through the lens of Qur’anic hermeneutics. Yet, his writings frequently cite Qur’anic verses to substantiate and legitimize his intellectual positions. This study addresses two central questions, namely, how Hasyim Asy‘ari uses and interprets the Qur’an as articulated in his books Ādāb al-‘Ālim wa al-Muta‘allim and Al-Tibyān fī al-Nahy ‘an Muqāṭa‘ati al-Arḥām wa al-Aqārib wa al-Ikhwān, and how the maqāṣidī dimensions are reflected in both works. By using textual analysis, the study reveals two important points. First, Hasyim Asy‘ari’s interpretive framework aligns with the maqāṣidī-based approach, wherein the Qur’anic verses are interpreted to substantiate specific religious positions. However, his method reflects elements of thematic exegesis (mauḍū‘ī), while in terms of sources and interpretive orientation, his approach can be classified as reason-based interpretation (tafsīr bi al-ra’y), exhibiting an adabī-ijtimā‘ī style that emphasizes socio-ethical dimensions. Second, with regard to the discernible dimensions of maqāṣidī, Hasyim Asy‘ari’s Qur’anic interpretation resonates with the broader objectives of Islamic law, particularly the values of al-‘adālah (justice), al-ḥurrīyah (freedom), al-mas’ūlīyah (responsibility), and al-insānīyah (human dignity).

Abstract

The concept of self-healing has become a rapidly growing social discourse, in line with socio-cultural changes influenced by capitalism and technological advances. Capitalism encourages individuals to exceed physical and mental limits in pursuit of professional achievement, leading to accumulated stress and mental health disorders. On the other hand, technological advances have facilitated access to information that can exacerbate social comparisons. Although the term self-healing is often associated with temporary activities such as vacationing or shopping, these often only provide momentary happiness without delving into spiritual healing. This article examines the concept of self-healing in Hamka’s Tafsir al-Azhar, which integrates spiritual dimensions into religious practices such as dhikr, prayer, patience, and gratitude. This study uses a qualitative approach with textual analysis to link Hamka's understanding of spiritual healing with contemporary psychological concepts such as mindfulness, emotional regulation, and gratitude. The results of this study indicate that Hamka’s approach to self-healing can build a dialogue between Islamic spirituality and modern psychological methods, opening up the potential for developing a more comprehensive and applicable approach to spiritual healing for contemporary Muslim communities.

Abstract

Islamic Education in Indonesia has undergone significant progress in line with the rapid development of technology. However, these developments are also part of the Western globalization strategy to spread the values of Western civilization. The impact is not only positive but also negative, even threatening the existence of Islamic educational institutions. To cope with the negative impact of globalization and the shift in values, revitalization of the values of the Quran in Islamic education is an important step. This article aims to provide a new insight into the role of Islamic education in shaping the character, morals, and achievements of pupils to support the education of future Muslim generations. It is done by exploring further the values of the Qur'an contained in Surah Al-Alaq verses 1-5. This research uses qualitative methods, a kind of library research. The approach used in this study is a phenomenological approach aimed at gaining a deep understanding, performing detailed descriptions, applying deep reductions, highlighting intersubjectivity, as well as exploring the meaning of the object of study under study. The results of the research show that based on the results of the analysis of the verses of the Qur'an, they contain fundamental values that can be a guide in the maintenance of Islamic education. Among them are humility and respect, the importance of knowledge and respect for science, independence and responsibility, and appreciation of the learning process.
