Abstract

This article aims to: (1) explain the associative meaning contained in the story collection titled Malam Terakhir by Leila S. Chudori, (2) describe the associative meaning contained in the story collection. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The main source of data in this study is the story collection Last Night written by Leila S. Chudori. The data collection process was carried out using reading and note-taking techniques. Data validation was carried out through increased diligence, discussions with peers, and using the triangulation method. Data analysis was conducted in three steps, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings of this study show that the associative meaning in the story collection Last Night by Leila S. Chudori is 54 data, which is divided into four groups: stylistic meaning with 16 data, affective meaning contains 10 data, connotative meaning includes 17 data, and collocative meaning totals 11 data. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the texts in the story collection Last Night by Leila S. Chudori contain vocabulary that has associative meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the variety of associative meanings in the short story collection Malam Terakhir by Leila S. Chudori. This literary work was selected for its rich vocabulary and the complexity of the social issues it addresses, ranging from politics to patriarchal culture. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a semantic approach based on Geoffrey Leech’s theory. Data collection was conducted through the free-listening-and-speaking method (SBLC) and note-taking techniques on the nine short stories in the anthology. The research results revealed 50 instances of associative meaning, encompassing five categories: instances of 11 stylistic meaning, 14 of connotative meaning, 8 of affective meaning, 4 of collocative meaning, and 13 of reflective meaning. The findings indicate that the author’s use of associative meanings plays a crucial role in building narrative atmosphere, conveying social criticism subliminally, and creating emotional depth for readers. The implications of this study are expected to enrich literary semantic literacy and serve as a reference for Indonesian language instruction.
