Abstract

This research analyzes students errors in solving story problems on mathematical number operations using the Newman Error Analysis (NEA) method. This type of research is descriptive with a qualitative approach, collecting data through tests and interviews conducted at SMP Negeri 24 Bandar Lampung. Of the 26 class VII students, 3 people were selected as samples using purposive sampling representing the high, medium and low score categories for more in-depth analysis. The results showed that students errors occurred at five stages of NEA: reading, comprehension, transformation, process skills, and encoding. Errors most often occur at the stage of comprehension and transforming the problem into a mathematical model, which is caused by limitations in comprehension the problem and applying correct mathematical concepts. Apart from that, distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic also affects students' ability to solve problems, so learning strategies that are more interactive and focus on improving concept understanding skills are needed.
