Abstract

This paper explores the role of law in the Physical Educaton, Sports, and Health (PE) curriculum, identifying the legal implications related to its development. The research focuses on the PE curriculum at the elementary and secondary education levels. It aims to analyze relevant legal aspects in the development of the PE curriculum, as well as to evaluate the compatibility of the curriculum with applicable legal principles. A qualitative approach is used to evaluate official documents related to the PE curriculum and to analyze relevant legal literature. The analysis indicates that the PE curriculum tends to overlook important legal aspects such as students’ rights and obligations, teachers’ responsibilities, and the protection of students’ safety and health. From this research, it is concluded that there is a need for greater attention to legal aspects in the development of the PE curriculum, by strengthening the legal framework governing key aspects such as safety, human rights, and institutional responsibilities in education.

Abstract

This research investigates how social and cultural factors influence the physical performance of volleyball athletes in this region, aiming to address the gap in knowledge regarding the athletes’ physical capabilities. This study focuses on a sample of young, elite male volleyball players in Jayapura Regency, examining how social and cultural elements shape their physical development and preparedness for competitive play. The primary objective is to assess the physical condition of these athletes and comprehend the cultural influences that contribute to their performance levels. This will provide valuable insights for improving training and development programs. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed, utilizing data collected through standardized physical performance tests. The sample comprised 37 male volleyball players, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Additionally, qualitative methods, including interviews and observations, were employed to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural context surrounding volleyball training. The physical tests revealed a range of performance levels among the athletes. Approximately 20% demonstrated a ‘very good’ performance, 24% showed ‘good’ performance, 29% exhibited ‘sufficient’ performance, while 14% had ‘unfavorable’ performance, and 13% displayed ‘very unfavorable’ performance. These results provide a snapshot of the volleyball players’ current physical condition and highlight key physical components such as speed, flexibility, strength, explosive power, agility, and endurance. The study underscores the significant role of social culture in shaping the physical performance of volleyball players in Jayapura Regency. Community support, traditional values, and communal training practices were identified as critical cultural factors influencing athletic development.

Abstract

Soccer in Papua is more than just a set of physical activities; it serves as a social and cultural platform that brings together various issues regarding conflict, identity, and community cohesion. This study explores the role of soccer in Papua, particularly in relation to issues of conflict, peace, and social unity. The main focus of this study is to show how this sport impacts interactions within communities and contributes to the process of local conflict resolution. Using a qualitative approach that includes document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and participatory observation in a number of communities, this study analyzes the experiences of players, community leaders, fans, and organizers involved in inter-village and inter-district competitions. The findings show that soccer acts as a tool for cultural diplomacy within communities, easing tensions between competing groups, encouraging cooperation, and strengthening collective identities that transcend ethnic and geographical boundaries. However, challenges remain regarding security management, unequal access to facilities, and a lack of regulations that support sports programs for peace. This research adds to the growing body of knowledge on sports and peacebuilding by presenting new evidence from Papua, where soccer not only strengthens community bonds but also fosters.
