Abstract

This study aims to analyze the optimization of Instagram feed as a medium for da’wah to enhance the understanding of the Qur’an, with a case study on the Instagram account @quranreview. In the digital era, the use of social media as a platform for da’wah has become increasingly relevant, especially for reaching the younger generation. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study method, collecting data through interviews, observations, and documentation. The key findings indicate that @quranreview optimizes its Instagram feed through engaging visual design, the application of social influence principles such as reciprocity and social proof, and active interaction with the audience to deepen Qur’anic understanding. The practical implications of this research emphasize the importance for digital da’wah account managers to effectively utilize visual elements and audience interaction in conveying relevant and engaging religious messages. This research also contributes theoretically to the development of digital da’wah understanding through social media.

Abstract

This study examines parasocial communication between millennial dai and their audiences on Instagram and TikTok within the context of digital Islamic preaching. The shift of da‘wah from conventional spaces to social media not only transforms the medium of religious communication but also reshapes communicative relations, intimacy construction, and the legitimation of religious authority. This study aims to analyze the strategies of parasocial intimacy construction employed by millennial dai and to compare how these strategies differ across Instagram and TikTok. Adopting a qualitative approach, this research employs digital netnography, multimodal content analysis, and audience reception interviews. Data were collected through sustained observation of five popular millennial dai, analysis of high-engagement Instagram posts and TikTok videos, and semi-structured interviews with active followers. The findings reveal that millennial dai employ six primary intimacy construction strategies: personal self-disclosure, interactive responsiveness, relatable informal language, emotional storytelling, behind-the-scenes content, and participation in digital trends. Cross-platform analysis shows that Instagram tends to foster curated and aspirational intimacy, whereas TikTok produces intimacy that appears spontaneous through casual expression and viral culture. However, the study demonstrates that such authenticity is performative and strategically adapted to platform-specific affordances. The findings further indicate that digital intimacy does not necessarily dilute religious messages, but rather transforms hierarchical preacher–audience relations into more fluid and communicative forms. At the same time, millennial dai operate within the logic of the attention economy and micro-celebrity culture, which may strengthen audience attachment while also posing risks of religious commodification and persona-centered devotion. Theoretically, this study contributes to parasocial communication scholarship within digital religion studies; practically, it offers a critical understanding of contemporary Islamic preaching in social media environments.

Abstract

This research investigates how digital accessibility, facilitated by “click and share” mechanisms, drives a spiritual revolution in Islamic da’wah practices among Indonesian Muslims. The study aims to explore the shifts in religious learning patterns and the evolution of individual spirituality within the rapidly advancing digital era. Employing a qualitative methodology, this study integrates digital ethnography and in-depth interviews with 30 participants, including digital preachers (da’i), active social media users, and individuals who have undergone spiritual transformation through online platforms. Thematic analysis was applied to uncover recurring patterns in digital spiritual engagement and the dynamics of transformation in these digital spaces. The findings reveal that the ease of access enabled by a simple “click” has redefined religious learning, shifting it from rigid, scheduled sessions to on-demand spiritual consumption. Meanwhile, the culture of “sharing” has fostered new forms of religious social validation. Digital da’wah has transformed from traditional, lengthy sermons into micro-content formats using memes, visuals, and personalized messages. The study proposes the theoretical concept of “fingertip spirituality” as a new paradigm for digital religious engagement, offering practical and theoretical implications for Islamic communication strategies in the digital age.
