Abstract

This research explores the conflict between the tradition of floral boards and universities’ commitment to sustainability, particularly in alignment with Green University principles. As floral boards contribute to environmental waste, this study aims to propose sustainable alternatives while preserving cultural practices. The research employs a qualitative approach, including in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, at a university in South Tangerang, Indonesia. By applying the SCAMPER technique during the Ideate phase, solutions such as tree seedlings, digital greetings, and circular-economy models were generated. The results show that replacing floral boards with sustainable alternatives successfully reduced waste, aligning with the university’s sustainability goals. The study concludes that cultural traditions can be modified without losing their social significance if supported by innovative, sustainable practices. The findings contribute to the literature on integrating sustainability with cultural traditions in educational institutions, offering actionable frameworks for universities to reduce waste while maintaining traditional values. Further research is recommended to explore the broader application of these solutions across various contexts.
