Abstract

Good practices of melon cultivation can be done by applying Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC) and arranging the appropriate composition of the planting media. This study aims to determine the effect composition planting media, concentration of liquid organic fertilizer (POC), and combination of both treatments on the growth and production of melon fruit. The study was arranged using a basic pattern of Completely Randomized Design (CRD) factorial consisting of 2 factors. The first factor is the planting media (M) which consists of 4 levels, namely M0 = soil: rice husks: sand (1: 0: 0); M1 = soil: rice husks: sand (0: 1: 1); M2 = soil: rice husks: sand (1: 0: 1); and M3 = soil: rice husks: sand (1: 1: 1). The second factor is concentration of POC (K) which consists of 3 levels, namely K0 (0%), K1 (5%), and K2 (10%). There are 12 treatment combinatio ns with 3 replications. The results show that combination of treatment of the composition of the planting media in the form of soil: rice husks: sand (0: 1: 1); with a concentration of 10% POC gave the highest results in plant height parameters in the vegetative phase (53.35 cm); plant height in the generative phase (223.51 cm); and melon fruit weight (1132.44 g). The concentration of 10% POC supported the fastest melon flowering (24.92 HST). The composition of planting media consisting of soil: rice husks: sand (0: 1: 1) produced melon plants with the longest roots (61.42 cm).

Abstract

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in laboratories is a fundamental aspect in supporting laboratory and research activities at universities, particularly in the field of animal science, which involves potential biological, chemical, and physical hazards. During the digital transition, the complexity of occupational risks has increased alongside the increasingly intensive use of laboratory technology. This community service activity aims to enhance the understanding and awareness of the academic community regarding the implementation of laboratory OSH as a preventive measure against workplace accidents. The methods employed include outreach, training, and the delivery of case-study-based materials online via the Zoom Meeting. A total of 151 participants took part in the activity, comprising students, faculty members, and laboratory staff from various universities. The results of the activity indicate that participants gained a comprehensive understanding of hazard identification, risk control strategies based on the 3E approach, the implementation of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), and the importance of near-miss reporting. This training contributes to building a culture of workplace safety and enhancing preparedness for emergency situations in the laboratory.

Abstract

The management of organic agricultural and livestock waste remains a challenge in society, primarily due to a lack of understanding regarding its potential for valuable and sustainable utilization. Organic waste is often perceived as mere refuse with no functional value, resulting in suboptimal management. This study aims to evaluate the level of public knowledge concerning the processing of organic agricultural and livestock waste, as well as the changes in knowledge following educational intervention. The research method employed was an online survey conducted via the social media platform Instagram, involving 2,048 respondents from the general public. The research instrument consisted of pre-test and post-test questionnaires covering five key indicators related to the utilization of organic agricultural and livestock waste. The results showed that the average knowledge level of respondents in the pre-test was 67.6%, which increased to 90.2% in the post-test, representing an improvement of 22.6%. The highest increase occurred in the indicator for utilizing animal waste as biogas and organic fertilizer, which reached 100%. These findings indicate that education delivered contextually and according to community needs can significantly enhance public understanding. This increase in knowledge is expected to serve as a foundation for fostering awareness and encouraging the implementation of independent, sustainable, and economically valuable waste management.
