Abstract

This study examines the educational transformation and institutional modernization of Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School in Jombang, Indonesia. The focus is on enhancing educational quality and reforming governance to meet the evolving demands of society and educational standards. A qualitative case study approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and analysis of institutional documents to gather comprehensive data on internal processes and structural changes. Findings reveal that transformation at Tebuireng is largely driven by the leadership’s growing awareness of the importance of educational quality and community expectations for graduates who are both religiously grounded and academically proficient. A key factor in this shift is the transition from a charismatic leadership style to a collective-delegative model. This change has fostered a more professional and innovative governance system and enhanced the recruitment and training of competent human resources. As a result, the school has witnessed improved graduate quality, rising public interest, and a stronger reputation as an adaptive, quality-focused pesantren. The study underscores the significance of participatory leadership and institutional responsiveness in pesantren modernization. The governance shift has enabled Tebuireng to maintain traditional Islamic values while adopting professional educational practices. This research contributes to the theoretical understanding of institutional transformation and participatory leadership in Islamic education. Practically, it offers a replicable model for other pesantren seeking modernization without compromising core religious principles.

Abstract

This study examines the Khidmah System as a model for human resource development and character education at the Salaf Darussalam Islamic Boarding School, Sumbersari, Kediri. The focus of the research includes the implementation of solemnity, its contribution to the competence and character of students, and the challenges of its application in the modern era. The method used is qualitative with the type of case study research through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation analysis. The results of the study show that khummah runs as an experiential learning mechanism that fosters discipline, responsibility, solidarity, basic leadership, and social skills of students. However, there are challenges in the form of the absence of written SOPs, inequality in the workload, and disruption of the use of gadgets. The research concludes that the Khidmah System has the potential to be a model of character education that can be replicated in other Islamic boarding schools, provided that it is strengthened through formal regulations, intensive coaching, and adaptation to technological developments.

Abstract

In the digital era, faith-based educational institutions face significant challenges in adapting to technological advancements to enhance governance and educational quality. Although digital transformation has become increasingly vital in the educational landscape, the digital divide remains a major concern, particularly among madrasahs and pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools) in Indonesia. This study explores the role of digital technology in improving the efficiency of governance and operations within faith-based educational institutions. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, and the analysis of official documents and academic literature. The findings indicate that the implementation of digital systems such as Learning Management Systems (LMS), cloud-based platforms, and financial information systems has significantly enhanced transparency, accountability, and academic monitoring. Nevertheless, several obstacles persist, including limited digital infrastructure in rural areas and low digital literacy among educators. This study highlights the importance of strategic interventions, including regulatory support, capacity-building programs, and infrastructure development, to ensure equitable access and sustainable implementation of digital technologies. The integration of digital technology not only streamlines administrative functions but also enriches interactive learning experiences and strengthens relationships between educators and learners.Effective digital transformation can serve as a catalyst for building more collaborative, transparent, and accountable faith-based education systems, while contributing to broader educational reform in Indonesia and similar contexts.
