Abstract

Essential oils from Citrus hystrix DC. are known for their rich bioactive composition, particularly citronellal, which has extensive applications in the fragrance and pharmaceutical industries. However, comparative studies on the chemical and physicochemical properties of oils extracted from different plant parts remain limited. This study investigated essential oils obtained by steam distillation from leaves (LEO), twigs (TEO), and a leaf–twig mixture (LTMEO). The oils were characterized using GC–MS and FTIR analyses, alongside measurements of density, refractive index, and yield. LTMEO yielded a yellow, aromatic oil with a density of 0.856 g/mL, a refractive index of 1.439, and a yield of 0.60%, consistent with the quality requirements of SNI 9231:2023. GC–MS profiling identified citronellal as the dominant compound, with concentrations of 83.88% in LEO, 69.88% in LTMEO, and 46.47% in TEO. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of aldehyde functional groups, consistent with the high citronellal content. Minor constituents such as linalool (5.24–8.91%), isopulegol (0.47–2.95%), β-citronellol (2.03–12.22%), and citronellyl acetate (4.28–6.48%) were also detected, potentially affecting citronellal isolation. Overall, the findings highlight C. hystrix DC. leaves as the most promising source of citronellal for industrial applications.

Abstract

Oil palm empty fruit bunches are one of the underutilized plantation wastes. Lignin is one of the components of plant cell walls besides cellulose and hemicellulose that can be used as a raw material for the synthesis of lignin-based adhesives, namely lignin-urea-formaldehyde (LUF) adhesive resins. The polymerization reaction of LUF formation was confirmed from the shift and change in the FTIR wavenumber of the -CO-ether group of LUF compared to UF and LF obtained during the synthesis process. The tensile strength test results of all adhesives produced exceeded the tensile strength value of commercial UF adhesives, and it was found that increasing the lignin concentration in the synthesized adhesives was directly proportional to the tensile strength value. Increasing the lignin concentration was also able to reduce formaldehyde emissions from all variations of adhesives produced, but was unable to exceed the lower formaldehyde emission value of UF adhesives.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a PBL (Problem-Based Learning) based Student Worksheet (LKPD) on the topic of colligative properties of solutions that are valid, reliable, and feasible to be used as an instrument for assessing students’ critical thinking skills. This research employed a Type 1 Design and Development Research (DDR) model consisting of the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Try-out, and Evaluation, although its implementation was limited to the Try-out stage. The study involved validators comprising university lecturers and chemistry teachers, as well as 106 twelfth-grade science students from MAN 2 Model Medan selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using semi-structured interview guidelines and assessment questionnaires and subsequently analyzed using the Content Validity Ratio (CVR), Content Validity Index (CVI), item validity tests, reliability analysis, item difficulty index, discrimination index, normality, and homogeneity tests. The findings indicate that out of 16 initial items, 11 essay items were found to be valid (Pearson Corelation > 0,3) and reliable with internal reliability coefficients categorized as good (Cronbach’s Alpha > 0.7). The difficulty indices of the items ranged from difficult to easy, with discrimination indices categorized as moderate to very good. Therefore, the developed PBL-based LKPD is deemed feasible for use in measuring students’ critical thinking skills in the context of colligative properties of solutions.
