Abstract

The Waste Patrol Program at Santo Thomas Catholic University Medan, organized by the Scout Movement, is a community service initiative based on Community-Based Service Learning (CBSL). It aims to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable behavior among the academic community. The program was created to address poor campus waste management and low student concern for cleanliness. Through participatory and educational methods, Scout students act as change agents by conducting cleanliness patrols, sorting organic and inorganic waste, and teaching environmental responsibility using the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Implementation follows three stages: preparation, execution, and evaluation/reflection, supported by observation, documentation, and simple data analysis. Results show notable progress: campus waste volume decreased by over 20%, while student participation in cleanliness activities rose by more than 50%. The program also fostered a culture of environmental awareness, reflected in regular waste segregation, material reuse, and independent initiatives to maintain campus hygiene. In conclusion, the Waste Patrol Program effectively shapes environmentally literate student character and contributes to building a clean, healthy, and sustainable green campus.

Abstract

Traditional games are a form of play activity that has many benefits for children's physical, social, and emotional development. One traditional game that is easy to play and fun is the marble racing game using spoons. This community service activity aims to create a cheerful and healthy atmosphere for children at the LKSA Jireh Semenifestara Orphanage through the implementation of marble racing games using spoons. The methods used in this activity were observation and documentation, which were carried out during the preparation process, implementation, and after the activity took place. The results of the observations showed that the children were very enthusiastic about participating in the game, appeared more active, cheerful, and enjoyed being with their friends. This game also helped train concentration, balance, patience, and foster sportsmanship and honesty in children. Abstract

Limited play spaces and low levels of physical activity among children in urban areas can negatively affect the development of gross motor skills. This community service activity aimed to enhance children’s gross motor development through the implementation of the traditional jump rope game at LKSA Jireh Semeinifestara Orphanage, Medan City. The participants were elementary school–aged children living in the orphanage. The methods used in this activity included initial observation, socialization of the jump rope game, direct practice with supervision, and evaluation through observation of children’s gross motor abilities. The results showed that the jump rope game was able to improve children’s gross motor skills, particularly in terms of balance, movement coordination, and leg muscle strength. In addition, the children demonstrated high enthusiasm and active participation throughout the activity. Therefore, the jump rope game can be considered an effective, simple, and easily implemented physical activity to support gross motor development among children in urban orphanage settings.
