Abstract

ABSTRACT: The problem of this study was: ”Is it effective to teach vocabulary by using STT to the seventh grade students of Karya Ibu Junior High School of Palembang?”.Therefore the objective of this study was to find out whether or not it was effective to teach vocabulary to the seventh grade students of Karya Ibu Junior High School of Palembang by using STT. The population of the study was all the seventh grade students of Karya Ibu Junior High School of Palembang in academic year of 2015/2016 with total member of 230. Its sample was taken from class VII. 5 which consisted of 37 students. The method was pre experimental design. In collecting the data, the researcher gave written test in the form 40 multiple choices, and in analyzing the data used match t-test. It was found that teaching English vocabulary by using snowball throwing was effective. It could be seen from the means difference between the result of the pre-test and the result of the post-test. The average of the students’ score in the pre-test was 7.5 and the average of the students’ score in the post-test was 9.25. There was a significantly different score between the result of the t-obtained and t-table. In this study, the result of the t-obtained was 2.154 and t-table was 1.697. It could be concluded that it was effective to teach English vocabulary by using STT to the seventh grade students of Karya Ibu Junior High School of Palembang. Key words: teaching, vocabulary, STT

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant improvement in writing and speaking abilities in narrative stories of the students who were taught by using Storyboard and those who were not. This study applied a quasi experimental design. The population of the study was the tenth graders with the total number of 224, where sixty-four students were taken as the sample by using purposive sampling. The data were collected by using writing and speaking tests and analyzed statistically by using paired-sample ttest and independent sample t-test. Based on the result independent sample t-test for writing test and the value of t-obtained (6.042) was higher than critical value of t-test (2.000 and 1.994). In addition, the value of t-obtained of speaking (4.649) was higher than critical value of t-test (2.000 and 1.994). This means that there was significant improvement in the abilities to write and speak narrative stories between the students who were taught by using Storyboard and those who were not. Thus, the use of storyboard could improve the students‘ writing and speaking abilities in retelling narrative stories. Keywords: Improving, writing, speaking, abilities, and storyboard

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to find out whether or not it was effective teaching English vocabulary in the theme of "Animals and Plants" using crossword puzzle. The population of this study was the seventh grade students of Junior High School Sriwijaya of Palembang in the academic year 2013/2014. The sample was taken from one class that consists of 30 students through convenience non-random sampling. The method of this study was the pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. The data were obtained by means of the test, the result were analyzed through matched t-test formula. Based on the study, it was to found that teaching English vocabulary in the theme of "animals and plants" using crossword puzzle to the seventh grade students of Junior High School Sriwijaya of Palembang was effective. The students' score has increased from 67.7 in the pre-test to 85.08 in the post-test and it was found that t-test was higher than t-table (7.3 > 1.697). It means that teaching English vocabulary in the theme of "animals and plants" using crossword puzzle was significantly effective. Key words: vocabulary, animals and plants theme, crossword puzzle

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out the validity, practicality, and effect of interactive multimedia for teaching reading comprehension on narrative texts based on South Sumatera local culture. This reasearch was development research by adapting the ADDIE model consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The subjects of this study were 25 fourth-semester students of Tridinanti University. This study found that The interactive multimedia for teaching narrative texts based on South Sumatera local culture were valid in terms of its contents, construct and after evaluated by three experts review. The total average score of the validity was 3.53. It was indicated at high validity level. This media was practical after evaluated in one-to-one evaluation with an average score (3.63) and small group evaluation with an average score (3.78). It was indicated at high practical Level. Moreover, it also had a potential effect after tried out in field test. It was determined by the result of students’ achievement in reading comprehension test since 72 % of the students pass.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the significant difference in writing achievement between the 11th grade students SMA Al-Amalul Khair Palembang who were taught by Mind Mapping technique and in that of those who were not. The second objective was to find out the improvement of the 11th grade students’ writing score at SMA Al-Amalul Khair Palembang after they were taught using Mind Mapping technique. The Quasi-experimental method through pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design was used in this study. The population was all of 11th grade natural science students at SMA Al-Amalul Khair Palembang in academic year 2018/2019. The total number of the population was 52 students in which they were divided into two classes as class 11.1 and 11.2. The sample was taken non-randomly. Class 11.1 was chosen as the experimental group and class 11.2 was chosen as the control group. The total number of the sample in the experimental group was 22 students. The test was administered twice as pretest and posttest. The results of the tests were analyzed by using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test through SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) program.

Abstract

This research was aimed at investigating the development of students’ writing and digital literacy through weblog. The sample of the study was 20 students of the fourth semester English study program of Tridinanti University Palembang. The researchers used purposive sampling as the way of choosing the sample because the sample is taught by the researchers in writing class. The researchers applied quasi-experimental design in term of pretest-posttestnon equivalent group design. Moreover, there are three types of data collection used by the researchers; they are test, questionnaire and observation. After the study, it was found out that the results of posttest between experiment and control group show significant difference with t value of posttest was 11.739, sig 0.000 while t value of gain score was 7.671, sig 0.000. Accordingly, all aspects of writing both posttest and gain score show significant differences. Furthermore, it was also found that the developments of digital literacy components from the highest to the lowest are as follows: 1) information sources (36%), 2) digital competencies (23%), 3) attitude and perspective (24%), and 4) basic ICT skill (17%). As the results, this reserach reveals that weblog is effective to develop students’ writing and digital literacy. In addition, students showed positive views because using blog was very interesting and it provided more cooperation between lecturer and students

Abstract

The objective of this study to find out whether or not there was any significant difference on vocabulary mastery between students who were taught by using Word Square technique and those who were not. This study used quasi experimental. The population of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Methodist 1 Palembang. The researchers used purposive sampling. There were 43 students as the sample. Each class consisted of students from VIII.A and 22 students from VIII.B. The researcher used paired sample t-test to compare the pretest and posttest result in experimental and control group. The result revealed that the significance (2-tailed) was 0.000, which is lower than alpha value 0.05, then t- obtained value = 5.340 was higher than t-table 2.086. In conclusion, the use of Word Square technique was effective to improve students' vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade students of SMP Methodist 1 Palembang. The data was analyzed by using independent sample t-test. The result showed that t-obtained 3.121 was higher than t-table 2.020 with degree of freedom (df=41) and the significant 2-tailed was 0.003. Therefore, there was a significant difference on vocabulary mastery between the students who were taught by using Word Square technique and those who were not.Keywords: Word Square Technique, Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

AbstractToday, we live in a dynamic digital world where both educators and students are challenged with the ever changing technological developments. Thus, this research was aimed at investigating the development of students’ writing and digital literacy through weblog. The results indicate that the concept of digital library in this study encouraged students’ knowledge about information sources. The highest progress made by the students from the observation results was in students’ basic ICT skill then followed by digital competencies because the number of the students who were in excellent category was almost or closely above 50% for these two components. Meanwhile, though attitude and perspective and information sources also increased still they were not as high as other two components as there was only small number of the students who were in excellent category. The results reveal that weblog is effective to develop students’ writing and digital literacy. In addition, students showed positive views because using blog was very interesting and it provided more cooperation between lecturer and students.Keywords : weblog; ICT; writing literacy; digital literacy.AbstrakSaat ini, kita hidup di dunia digital yang dinamis di mana dosen dan masiswa ditantang dengan perkembangan teknologi yang terus berubah. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki perkembangan tulisan mahasiswa dan literasi digital melalui weblog. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 20 mahasiswa dari program studi bahasa Inggris semester empat Universitas Tridinanti Palembang. Para peneliti menggunakan purposive sampling sebagai cara memilih sampel karena sampel diajarkan oleh para peneliti di kelas menulis. Para peneliti menerapkan desain quasi-eksperimental dalam hal desain kelompok non-setara pretest-posttest. Selain itu, ada tiga jenis pengumpulan data yang digunakan oleh para peneliti; mereka adalah tes, kuesioner dan observasi. Setelah penelitian, ditemukan bahwa hasil posttest antara eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol menunjukkan perbedaan yang signifikan dengan nilai t postes adalah 11,739, sig 0,000 sedangkan t nilai skor gain adalah 7,671, sig 0,000. Dengan demikian, semua aspek penulisan posttest dan gain score menunjukkan perbedaan yang signifikan. Selain itu, juga ditemukan bahwa perkembangan komponen literasi digital dari yang tertinggi ke yang terendah adalah sebagai berikut: 1) sumber informasi (36%), 2) kompetensi digital (23%), 3) sikap dan perspektif (24% , dan 4) keterampilan dasar TIK (17%). Hasil menunjukkan bahwa konsep perpustakaan digital dalam penelitian ini mendorong pengetahuan mahasiswa tentang sumber informasi. Kemajuan tertinggi yang dibuat oleh mahasiswa dari hasil pengamatan adalah dalam keterampilan TIK dasar mahasiswa kemudian diikuti oleh kompetensi digital karena jumlah siswa yang berada dalam kategori sangat baik hampir atau hampir di atas 50% untuk dua komponen ini. Sementara itu, meskipun sikap dan perspektif dan sumber-sumber informasi juga meningkat, namun tidak setinggi dua komponen lainnya karena hanya ada sedikit mahasiswa yang berada dalam kategori sangat baik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa weblog efektif untuk mengembangkan tulisan dan literasi digital mahasiswa. Selain itu, mahasiswa menunjukkan pandangan positif karena menggunakan blog sangat menarik dan memberikan lebih banyak kerja sama antara dosen dan mahasiswa.Kata kunci : weblog: TIK, literasi tulisan; literasi digital

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objective of this research was to find out whether or not there was significant difference on reading comprehension achievement between the eleventh grade students of SMA Karya Ibu Palembang who were taught by using   REAP technique and those who were not. The population of this research was the eleventh graders of SMA Karya Ibu Palembang. 62 students were selected as the sample of this study by using purposive sampling technique. They were divided into two groups, experimental and control group. Each of them consisted of 31 students. To conduct this research, quasi experimental design was applied. The instrument for collecting data used was reading comprehension test that was distributed to the sample twice (pretest and posttest). There were 30 valid items of questions in the form of multiple choices. The result of the test was analyzed by percentage formula. The data obtained were also analyzed statistically by using SPSS. The result of the test showed that the significance two tailed was 0.027 which was lower than 0.05. With df 60, the result of independent sample t-test revealed that the t-table was 2.0003. As the t-obtained was higher than t-table (2.260), hence the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was confirmed. It can be said that there was a significant difference on reading comprehension achievement between the students who were taught by using REAP (Reading, Encoding, Annotating, Pondering) technique, and those who were not.Keywords : Reading Comprehension, REAP Technique, Narrative TextsABSTRAKTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui adakah perbedaan yang signifikan terhadap prestasi pemahaman membaca antara siswa kelas XI SMA Karya Ibu Palembang yang diajar dengan menggunakan teknik REAP dan yang tidak. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI SMA Karya Ibu Palembang. 62 siswa dipilih sebagai sampel penelitian ini dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Mereka dibagi menjadi dua kelompok, kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Masing-masing terdiri dari 31 siswa. Untuk melakukan penelitian ini, desain quasi eksperimental diterapkan. Instrumen untuk mengumpulkan data yang digunakan adalah tes pemahaman membaca yang dibagikan kepada sampel sebanyak dua kali (pretest dan posttest). Ada 30 item pertanyaan yang valid dalam bentuk pilihan ganda. Hasil tes dianalisis dengan rumus persentase. Data yang diperoleh juga dianalisis secara statistik dengan menggunakan SPSS. Hasil tes menunjukkan bahwa signifikansi two tailed adalah 0,027 yang lebih rendah dari 0,05. Dengan df 60, hasil dari sampel independen t-test menunjukkan bahwa t-tabel adalah 2.0003. Karena t-hitung lebih tinggi dari t-tabel (2,260), maka hipotesis nol (Ho) ditolak dan hipotesis alternatif (Ha) dikonfirmasi. Dapat dikatakan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada pencapaian pemahaman membaca antara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan teknik REAP (Reading, Encoding, Annotating, Pondering), dan mereka yang tidak.Kata kunci: Pemahaman Membaca, Teknik REAP, Narrative Texts
