Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out whether teaching reading comprehension through IEPC (Imagine, Elaborate, Predict, Confirm) Strategy had a significant effect on the student’s reading achievement or not. The population of the study was the Tenth Grade Students of State Islamic Senior High School 3 of Palembang in the academic year of 2015/2016. In doing the study, the researcher used quasi-experimental design to two groups of students. The total number of students was 369. The sample was 68 students that were taken by using purposive sampling strategy. Thirty four students were in the experimental group and thirty four students were in the control group. There are two instruments for collecting the data i.e. test and questionnaire. The result showed that teaching reading comprehension through IEPC strategy had a significant effect on the students’ reading achievement. The result of paired sample from experimental group was 10.877. Based on the independent sample t-test analysis, it was found that t-obtained was 11.17 (df=66; p=0.025), the critical value of the test was 1.668, it means there was significant difference between students’ comprehension in reading through IEPC strategy and those who were taught through lecturing.  Keywords : Effectiveness, Improving, Reading Comprehension, IEPC (Imagine, Elaborate, Predict, Confirm) Strategy

Abstract

Reading is an essential skill that contributes significantly to the success of language learning; therefore, it should be prioritized. Reading skill needs comprehension to understand the context and get new information from the texts. To comprehend the texts, the readers need a strategy.  This study aimed to find out whether or not there was any significant difference in students’ reading comprehension of narrative text between those who were taught by using SQP2RS and those who were not. This study used quasi quasi-experimental method to conduct the research. There were 72 students taken as samples using purposive sampling. In collecting the data, the result of the test was used as a pretest and posttest. To verify the hypothesis, the result of the Paired Sample T-Test found that the t-obtained was higher than 0.05. It indicated there was no significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension. Furthermore, the result of the independent sample t-test found that the t-obtained was lower than the t-table and the significance value of the Paired Sample T-Test was higher than 0.05. It indicated that there was no significant improvement in the tenth graders’ reading comprehension achievement. Meanwhile, the result of the Independent Sample T-Test showed that there was no significant difference in students’ reading comprehension between the experimental and control groups. Thus, it can be concluded that the SQP2RS strategy could not be an effective strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension of narrative text.

Teachers can employ flexible grouping to enhance choral and duet reading which can benefit students' fluency and expressiveness. This strategy enrichment the students of reading boosts confidence in their ability to speak and read English. This research aimed to determine whether there was a significant difference in reading achievement on the descriptive text between tenth-grade students at SMK Gajah Mada 3 Palembang who were taught using the choral reading approach and those who were not. The participants were tenth-grade students from SMK Gajah Mada 3 Palembang. This research sample consisted of 41 students chosen using a purposive selection technique. They were placed into two groups: experimental and control groups. This research used a quasi-experimental design. The data collection tool was a reading achievement test administered twice to the sample (pretest and posttest). There were 20 valid multiple-choice questions. The data were not normally distributed; thus, the Mann-Whitney U Test and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test were employed to examine data. According to the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test findings, the students' reading achievement significantly improved when they used the choral reading strategy. The Mann-Whitney U test results demonstrated students who got a treatment utilizing the choral reading technique excelled in reading compared to those who did not. There was a substantial difference in reading achievement on descriptive text between tenth-grade students at SMK Gajah Mada 3 Palembang who were taught using choral reading strategies and those who were not.
