Abstract

This study aimed to enhance students’ speaking skills through the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PBL) model in Indonesian language instruction for Grade VIII students at SMP Daya Cipta Medan. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The participants were 25 students of Class VIII A. Data were collected through classroom observations, speaking performance tests, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the application of PBL had a positive and significant impact on students’ speaking skills, as evidenced by improvements in student participation, confidence, fluency, intonation, diction accuracy, and the ability to convey ideas coherently and systematically. Learning mastery, which was initially only 24% in the pre-cycle stage, increased substantially by the end of Cycle II. These results demonstrate that Project-Based Learning is an effective instructional model for developing students’ speaking skills in Indonesian language learning.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of student participation in Indonesian language learning, which remains teacher-centered, causing students to tend to be passive in the learning process. This study aims to describe the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model and to analyze the improvement of student participation in Indonesian language learning on descriptive text material in Grade VIII of SMP Budi Setia Sunggal. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. The study was conducted in the odd semester of the 2025/2026 academic year and involved 21 Grade VIII students as research subjects. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the implementation of the PBL model was able to increase student participation, as indicated by an increase in the number of active students from approximately 43% to 71%. Students became more active in group discussions, more confident in expressing opinions, and able to collaborate in completing learning tasks. However, some students still showed a lack of confidence when giving presentations in front of the class. The conclusion of this study affirms that the PBL model can create Indonesian language learning that is more active, interactive, and student-centered. These findings contribute to the development of innovative learning practices, particularly in increasing student participation in descriptive text material, and provide practical implications for teachers in designing more participatory learning strategies.

Abstract

Sanggar Anak Sungai Deli (Sasude) is a community-based learning center focused on educational and creative training activities. Its primary aim is to empower children living in the outskirts along the Deli River by nurturing their potential in various fields, including the arts, literature, environmental awareness, and other forms of creativity. This community service initiative aims to provide literacy mentoring to the children of the sanggar through an interactive and participatory writing approach. The core focus is to cultivate narrative thinking and self-expression through hands-on writing activities. The implementation process is structured into three systematic stages: planning, execution, and evaluation. During the implementation phase, participants were given the opportunity to write a narrative with the theme “I Will Become”, accompanied by visual illustrations to enhance the meaning of their writing. Following this, the children were encouraged to present their work in front of their peers as an exercise in oral literacy and confidence building. The results of the program indicate a notable improvement in the children’s understanding of literacy, particularly in selecting appropriate vocabulary, organizing ideas coherently, and articulating their thoughts verbally. More than just writing, the children began to grasp that literacy involves thinking critically, communicating effectively, and reflecting on the meaning behind their own narratives. These skills are expected to serve as a valuable foundation for their personal development in the future.
