Abstract

The practice of giving wages to slaughterers of sacrificial animals continues to cause debate in Muslim society, especially regarding its validity from a fiqh perspective. In Solok City, West Sumatra, this phenomenon is interesting because it involves interactions between fiqh norms, Minangkabau customs, and the practical demands of organizing worship. This study aims to analyze the practice of giving wages to slaughterers of sacrifice within the framework of Islamic law and local customs. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The results of the study show that the practice of giving wages is carried out in various forms, both in the form of cash and non-material compensation that is adjusted to local agreements and is not taken from the portion of the sacrificial animal. Minangkabau customs that are based on the principle of adat basandi syarak also provide social legitimacy to this practice, which is considered not to be in conflict with maqashid sharia. These findings show that the flexibility of Islamic law can be articulated contextually in the local socio-cultural space. The implication is that more adaptive religious policy guidelines and fatwas are needed to the dynamics of society and are participatory in formulating valid and inclusive governance of sacrificial worship.
