Abstract

According to data from the Indonesian Health Survey in 2023, the prevalence of nutritional status in the elderly in Indonesia showed that 19.3% of the elderly were obese, while 8.6% were malnourished. This research method was conducted with a descriptive approach to see the description of anthropometric nutritional status according body mass index (BMI) in the community in Limau Manis Subdistrict, Padang. Anthropometric data was collected through measurements of height and weight, while demographic data included information on age and gender. This study aims to analyze anthropometric patterns in 32 elderly respondents in Limau Manis Subdistrict, Padang City. The results of the analysis showed that the average BMI of the population was 65.62%, with a prevalence of overweight of 9.37%, obesity of 18.75%, and thinnes (less) 6.25%. This study concludes that the nutritional status of the elderly in Limau Manis Subdistrict, Padang City, shows variations in the distribution pattern of Body Mass Index (BMI). This finding indicates that the problem of obesity and overweight is more dominant than malnutrition in the elderly. Demographic features such as age and gender, which provide important insights for designing health intervention programs to improve the quality of life of the elderly in Limau Manis District.

Abstract

Inadequate breast milk production is a major contributor to the failure of exclusive breastfeeding. Banana flower (Musa spp.) has long been traditionally used as a galactagogue in Southeast Asia; however, its clinical effectiveness requires systematic evaluation. This systematic review aims to evaluate the lactogenic effects of banana flower on breast milk production based on available clinical evidence. A systematic search was conducted in ProQuest, ScienceDirect, and Portal Garuda databases for studies published between 2016 and 2026. The inclusion criteria comprised randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies involving postpartum mothers. Results: Thirteen studies were identified for synthesis. The majority of quasi-experimental studies conducted in Indonesia reported a significant increase in breast milk volume (p < 0.05) following the consumption of fresh banana flower (200–300 g/day). In contrast, high-quality RCTs using encapsulated extracts demonstrated inconsistent findings, with some studies reporting no significant differences compared with placebo during the early postpartum period. These discrepancies may be attributed to variations in banana species (e.g., Musa balbisiana), processing methods, and dosage. Phytochemical compounds such as saponins and flavonoids present in banana flower are hypothesized to stimulate prolactin secretion. Conclusion: Banana flower shows promising potential as a natural galactagogue, particularly when consumed as a whole food. However, standardized RCTs with precise dosing are required to confirm its clinical applicability.

Abstract

Obesity in adolescents is a health problem whose prevalence is closely related to increased oxidative stress. Obesity conditions lead to increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can trigger lipid peroxidation, cell damage, and various metabolic disorders. Biomarkers of oxidative stress, such as malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and the activity of antioxidant enzymes, namely superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT), can be used to assess oxidative stress levels in obese individuals. Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is a functional food that contains medium-chain fatty acids (medium-chain triglycerides; MCTs) and phenolic compounds that are thought to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. The study aimed to analyze the effect of Virgin Coconut Oil supplementation on biomarkers of oxidative stress in obese adolescents. This study uses a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. A total of 40 obese adolescents aged 15–18 years were divided into two groups, namely the treatment group that received VCO supplementation of 15 mL per day for 8 weeks and the control group that received only balanced nutrition education. The results indicate that VCO supplementation has the potential to increase the body's antioxidant capacity and reduce oxidative stress in obese adolescents. Although the decrease in BMI and waist circumference did not show a statistically significant difference, there was a tendency to improve the anthropometric profile in the group receiving VCO

Abstract

This community service aims to improve the nutritional status of the community through empowerment based on local potential, namely the cultivation and utilization of oyster mushrooms in Kalomalang Kulon Tourism Village. Oyster mushrooms are a food source rich in vegetable protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, so they have the potential to support the improvement of people's nutritional intake. The method of implementing activities includes nutritional counseling, oyster mushroom cultivation training, and demonstration of oyster mushroom-based food product processing. The approach used is participatory, involving community groups, especially housewives and farmer groups. The results of the activity showed an increase in public knowledge related to the nutritional value and benefits of oyster mushrooms, which was shown by the increase in pre-test scores of 43% and post-test scores of 96%.  In addition, the community is able to cultivate oyster mushrooms independently and develop various processed products, such as nuggets, stir-fried oyster mushrooms, and oyster mushroom chips. The mushroom maker has 11 employees, which consists of 3 parts. Nurseries and packing. This program also has an impact on increasing the consumption of nutritious food and opening up opportunities for local food-based household businesses. Thus, community empowerment through the cultivation and consumption of oyster mushrooms has proven to be effective as one of the strategies in improving the nutritional status and food independence of village communities. This activity is expected to continue and be replicated in other regions with similar potential.
