Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ learning obstacles in understanding Green Chemistry within the context of a soap-making activity. As sustainability becomes an increasingly important issue in science education, it is essential to understand how students engage with environmentally oriented chemistry concepts. This study employs qualitative case study approach. The participants consisted of five grade XI students (second-year high school), comprising two boys and three girls. The interviews were conducted at a private school in Bandung. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five main questions. The responses were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key themes related to students’ learning challenges in understanding green chemistry, which were categorized into five main themes. The findings reveal that students face significant challenges in understanding Green Chemistry, particularly due to abstract concepts, limited classroom engagement, and teacher-centered instruction. Moreover, students often struggle to connect the theoretical principles of Green Chemistry with real-life applications, such as waste reduction or the use of renewable materials in everyday chemical processes. These findings highlight the importance of designing more interactive, context-based, and student-centered learning strategies. It is expected that the results of this study can serve as a foundation for developing instructional designs that better support students’ understanding of sustainability-oriented chemistry.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan menjelaskan hasil literatur review mengenai konsep dan implementasi Science in the Community (SciCom) di daerah Indonesia dalam konteks pembelajaran IPA. Penelitian ini menggunakan Systematic Literatur Review (SLR) dengan lima tahapan, yaitu penentuan tema, pencarian data, seleksi, analisis, dan penarikan simpulan. Pencarian data menggunakan Publish or Perish (PoP) dengan sumber utama dari google scholar. Setelah dilakukan seleksi sesuai kriteria yang ditentukan diperoleh artikel sebanyak 38 yang dianalisis berdasarkan kriteria dan fokus penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 1) Science in the Community di Indonesia disajikan sebagai bahan kajian dan konteks pada beberapa konsep dalam pembelajaran IPA di Sekolah, 2) Bentuk SciCom di Indonesia yang banyak diintegrasikan dalam pembelajaran berupa sumber daya alam (55,26%), kebudayaan dan tradisi (28,94%), dan aktivitas masyarakat (15,78%). 3) SciCom sebagai konteks pembelajaran IPA disajikan dalam bentuk bahan ajar (57,89%), perangkat pembelajaran (34,21%), dan media pembelajaran (7,89%). Hasil tersebut menunjukkan bahwa SciCom di daerah Indonesia sudah dikembangkan dan diimplemetasikan dalam pembelajaran IPA dengan berbagai jenis dan bentuk integrasi sesuai kebutuhan proses pembelajaran

Abstract

Scientific literacy is an essential competency in chemistry education; however, its development remains a significant challenge. One of the factors contributing to the low level of scientific literacy is the limited quality of teaching materials used in the learning process. This study aimed to develop and validate an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)-based e-module on the utilization of waste metal materials as electrodes for salt water batteries to support students' scientific literacy. The study employed the Design and Development Research (DDR) approach, focusing on Product and Tool Research, which consists of four stages: analysis, design, development, and evaluation. The participants included five chemistry teachers involved in the needs analysis stage, three validators (two university experts and one chemistry teacher), and nine twelfth-grade students from a public senior high school in Bandung City who were selected based on their academic achievement for the limited trial. The findings indicate that the developed e-module fulfills the characteristics of a high-quality e-module and meets the criteria for content, presentation, and language feasibility. Furthermore, the module integrates scientific literacy components with the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), thereby supporting contextual learning that is relevant to students' everyday lives. The validation results confirmed that the e-module is suitable for classroom implementation, with several recommendations for further refinement. The limited trial also demonstrated a positive improvement in students' scientific literacy profiles, with achievement levels ranging from 63% to 96%, which falls within the good category. These findings suggest that the developed ESD-based e-module has the potential to serve as an effective instructional resource for fostering scientific literacy in chemistry learning.Keywords: E-Module, ESD, salt water battery, science literacy
