Abstract

Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) is one of Indonesia’s leading agricultural commodities, with West Lampung serving as a major production center. Besides its economic significance, robusta coffee has garnered scientific attention due to its potential as a source of bioactive compounds. Among these, flavonoids stand out for their well-documented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties, making them highly relevant for applications in cosmetic and personal care products, particularly in hair care formulations. Flavonoids are known to play a crucial role in maintaining scalp health, preventing oxidative damage to hair follicles, and promoting overall hair vitality. This study aimed to investigate the phytochemical profile and quantify the total flavonoid content in Coffea canephora bean extract originating from West Lampung. Phytochemical screening was conducted qualitatively to detect the presence of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and flavonoids. For the quantification of total flavonoid content, a UV-Visible spectrophotometric method was employed, using quercetin as the standard reference compound. The extract was first macerated with 96% ethanol, followed by filtration and evaporation to obtain a concentrated sample. The results revealed the presence of key bioactive compounds, including tannins, saponins, and notably, flavonoids. The total flavonoid content was found to be 784 mg QE/g extract. These findings support the potential utilization of Coffea canephora from West Lampung as a functional raw material in cosmetic formulations, particularly for hair care products aimed at protecting against oxidative stress and enhancing scalp and hair health. Further studies are recommended to explore the extract’s mechanism of action and its compatibility in cosmetic bases.

Abstract

Bidara leaves are known to contain alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, tannins, and saponins. This study aims to analyze how the three extraction methods used can affect the characteristics of bidara leaf extract. The extraction methods used in this study were the maceration method, the ultrasonic method, and the soxhlet method. The calculation of the yield value was carried out and the difference was seen with the largest number in the ultrasonic method 10.37% w/w, the soxhlet method 3.49% w/w, and the maceration method 3.68% w/w, then the stock solution calculation was carried out and the results were obtained ultrasonic method 0.1%, soxhlet method 0.0044%, and maceration method 0.012%. The evaluation used was phytochemical screening. The results of phytochemical screening showed that the leaf extract contained secondary metabolites, namely alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, tannins, and saponins. It can be concluded that the three extraction methods in bidara leaves did not show differences in the presence of secondary metabolites, but affected their yield values.

Abstract

Moringa oleifera leaves have attracted considerable interest as a natural source of bioactive compounds for cosmetic applications because of their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a gel serum containing M. oleifera leaf extract as a natural skincare formulation with desirable physicochemical properties and storage stability. The leaves were extracted by maceration using 96% ethanol, and the resulting extract was subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening before incorporation into a gel serum formulation containing glycerin, butylene glycol, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide. The formulated gel serum was evaluated for its organoleptic characteristics, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, and physical stability under storage at 25°C and 40°C for one month. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of flavonoids, steroids, tannins, and saponins, whereas alkaloids were not detected. The developed gel serum exhibited a homogeneous appearance, a skin-compatible pH of 5.35, and viscosities of 420 and 303 mPa·s at 30 and 60 rpm, respectively, while maintaining good physical stability under both storage conditions. These findings suggest that M. oleifera leaf extract is a promising natural bioactive ingredient for stable and multifunctional serum formulations and warrants further investigation regarding long-term stability, skin compatibility, and clinical efficacy.
