Abstract

Critical thinking skills are one of the essential competencies required in the 21st century and should be developed from the elementary school level. One learning model that can be used to improve these skills is Problem Based Learning (PBL). This study aims to analyze research trends and the effectiveness of Problem Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing elementary school students’ critical thinking skills through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The study was conducted based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, using data sources from Google Scholar and Scopus published between 2020 and 2026. Based on the selection process, 15 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. The results showed that PBL research was dominated by articles indexed in SINTA 2 and SINTA 5, with Science being the most frequently studied subject. Furthermore, all reviewed articles indicated that the implementation of PBL had a positive impact on elementary school students’ critical thinking skills. Therefore, Problem Based Learning (PBL) can be recommended as an effective learning model for developing critical thinking skills among elementary school students.
