Abstract

This study explores the symbolic meanings and social roles of the Karia tradition in Muna society, highlighting its contribution to preserving cultural identity in the face of modernisation. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving eight informants from diverse social backgrounds. Through this approach, the research seeks to understand how the Karia tradition continues to serve as a bridge between ancestral heritage and contemporary life, ensuring that cultural values remain alive and relevant across generations. The analysis was carried out using thematic analysis and Victor Turner's theory of ritual passage. The research results show that the Karia tradition symbolises female maturity and a means of character education and self-purification. This ritual also strengthens social cohesion and teaches important values such as chastity and social responsibility. However, the forces of modernisation and digitalisation pose challenges to the continuity of this tradition, particularly among younger generations who are becoming increasingly detached from traditional practices. This study contributes to the field of cultural anthropology by deepening the understanding of rites of passage and their evolving relevance in modern society. It also offers insights and recommendations on how digitalisation can be used not as a threat, but as a tool to revitalise and preserve local cultural heritage ensuring that traditions like Karia continue to thrive in contemporary contexts.

Abstract

Studies of women’s Muslim attire often focus on standardised hijabs and the dichotomy of oppression versus resistance, resulting in vernacular practices and women’s agency being overlooked. Rimpu—the practice among women in Bima of wrapping the body in two traditional sarongs (Tembe nggoli)—is highlighted as a vernacular expression of religious identity. Drawing on ethnographic methods (interviews, observation, documentation) and Spradley’s analytical framework (domains, taxonomy, componential analysis, cultural themes), this study examines Rimpu through Saba Mahmood’s concept of ‘embodied piety’ and the field of veiled anthropology. The findings: Rimpu is more than just a set of functions; it is a vernacular representation of Islamic modesty standards. The Bima weaving tradition localises the global norm of body covering, resulting in a specific regional Muslim femininity as embodied piety. Rimpu is being supplanted by standardised global hijabs, which has prompted the revival of Rimpu as a cultural legacy through festivals and school curricula. Such revitalisation runs the risk of folklorizing a live practice while contributing to a theory of vernacular head-covering' that transcends the oppression-resistance duality by emphasising women's autonomy and the localisation of Islamic faith.

Abstract

This study examines the life and humanitarian legacy of Johannes van der Steur, widely known as the “Father of Humanity” in Magelang, and analyzes his work through Abraham Maslow’s humanistic theory. Using Kuntowijoyo’s historical method, the research follows five stages: topic selection, heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. Data were collected from personal diaries, biographies, KITLV archives, and historical artifacts. The findings show that Van der Steur’s humanitarian mission was driven by deep concern for abandoned and vulnerable children during the Dutch colonial period. Through the establishment of the Oranje Nassau Orphanage, he developed a systematic approach that addressed children’s physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization needs. Analysis based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs reveals that Van der Steur’s practices embodied key humanistic principles decades before the publication of A Theory of Human Motivation in 1943. His efforts extended beyond charity by creating a supportive environment that promoted dignity, personal growth, and social integration. This study concludes that Van der Steur’s legacy reflects the humanistic belief in the inherent potential of every individual and demonstrates the transformative role of education and care in fostering self-actualization.
