Abstract

The study indicates that physiotherapy interventions have a positive effect on improving muscle strength, balance, and cognitive function, while also reducing the risk of falls. The program was implemented through a combination of physiotherapy exercises, health education, and brain gym activities to enhance awareness and cognitive-related abilities. An unsupportive environment and limited access to medical services present major challenges, requiring an individualized approach to care. After 12 weeks of intervention, participants showed significant improvement in physical strength and balance. The recommendations include modifying the home environment and providing family and healthcare support to ensure safety and ongoing care.

Abstract

This community service research examines the role of physiotherapy in assisting parents in managing asthma through the implementation of the Active Cycle Breathing Technique (ACBT) at the Kartini Community Health Center in Pematangsiantar. This activity involves education on breathing techniques, live demonstrations, and intensive support for parents and children with asthma. ACBT, which consists of three main components: Breathing Control, Deep Breathing or Thoracic Expansion Exercises, and Huffing/Forced Expiratory Technique, is intended to mobilize lung secretions, improve ventilation, and optimize cough effectiveness in asthma patients. In addition to asthma management, this technique has previously been applied to other respiratory conditions such as pulmonary tuberculosis and bronchopneumonia, proving its effectiveness in addressing respiratory problems and improving patients' quality of life. The results of the activity indicate an increase in parents' understanding and skills in performing breathing techniques and a decrease in the frequency of asthma symptoms in children. This report comprehensively describes the background, objectives, implementation methods, results and analysis of the activity, and conclusions from the implementation of ACBT as a non-pharmacological intervention in asthma management.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate community service activities that integrate physiotherapy and knowledge enhancement on exercise therapy and functional activities for the elderly in Simalungun Regency. The study was conducted in Raya Kahean Village using two-way discussions, live demonstrations, and quantitative evaluation through pre- and post-tests. The results showed a significant increase in the elderly's understanding and functional abilities after participating in the intervention program during 2020. These findings indicate that an integrative physiotherapy approach, with a combination of education and practical exercises, effectively improves the quality of life of the elderly and can be used as a model for similar activities in other areas.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve the physical capacity of older adults in Bukit Sofa Village, Siantar Sitalasari District, through a structured physical exercise intervention and nutrition education. Older adults are vulnerable to declining physical capacity, malnutrition, and frailty, which negatively affect quality of life and increase morbidity and mortality. A 12-month community-based quasi-experimental intervention study was conducted with participants aged ≥60 years. The intervention included multimodal physical training (strength, balance, flexibility, and aerobic activity) performed three times per week for 60 minutes per session, along with nutrition education based on the WHO ICOPE guideline and basic function screening using the SKILAS tool. Pre- and post-intervention evaluations were conducted using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Senior Fitness Test (SFT), and anthropometric measures (BMI and WHR). Results showed significant improvements in muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and aerobic capacity, as well as a reduced risk of frailty and malnutrition. The program’s effectiveness was supported by the involvement of caregivers and community leaders.

Abstract

This community service study focuses on dysmenorrhea, a common health issue among adolescents that can negatively affect academic and social performance. Dysmenorrhea has a high prevalence among adolescents (up to 94%), highlighting the need for effective management strategies. The program was implemented at SMP Negeri 2 Pematangsiantar to educate students and provide physiotherapy interventions to alleviate menstrual pain. The intervention included education about the causes, mechanisms, and management of dysmenorrhea, as well as practical physical exercises (dysmenorrhea exercises). A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test measures was used to evaluate the outcomes. The results demonstrated a significant increase in participants’ knowledge after the intervention. The program aims not only to improve understanding but also to support reduced pain intensity, better quality of life, and improved academic performance among participating students.
