Abstract

This community engagement program aims to enhance the technical competencies of students in a vocational education institution through the application of Total Station technology for contour measurement. The initiative was designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and modern field surveying practices by integrating structured training, intensive mentoring, and digital mapping tools. A total of 30 geomatics students participated in the program, engaging in instrument familiarization, field measurement exercises, and data processing using CAD-based mapping software. The training adopted an experiential learning model with a learning-by-doing approach, supported by digital modules and instructional video tutorials. Evaluation results show substantial improvements in student competencies: 85% of participants were able to operate the Total Station independently, 70% processed survey data digitally, and 80% produced contour maps of acceptable quality. The program also generated a digital learning module as a sustainable output. These findings demonstrate that integrating Total Station technology into vocational education effectively improves students’ understanding of topography, spatial data analysis skills, and industry-oriented work readiness.

Abstract

Scientific writing is an essential competency for vocational students, enabling them to engage with academic literacy demands and adapt to the evolving expectations of the modern workforce. At SMKN 1 Tana Toraja, students’ scientific writing skills remain limited, as reflected in their difficulties understanding article structure, applying citation techniques, and conducting proper literature searches. This community service program was implemented to address these challenges through structured training combined with continuous mentoring. The program introduced participants to the fundamentals of academic writing, guided them in developing article outlines, provided instruction on identifying credible references, and trained them to use reference management tools such as Mendeley. Students also received step-by-step assistance in refining their drafts until completion. The learning approach emphasized hands-on practice, allowing participants to experience the writing process directly and progressively. Program effectiveness was assessed through pre-test and post-test evaluations, which revealed a 42% improvement in students’ conceptual understanding. Additionally, 78% of participants successfully completed scientific manuscripts that met expected academic standards. The program produced a digital writing module and audiovisual materials that can serve as sustainable learning resources. Overall, this initiative significantly strengthened students’ academic literacy skills and encouraged the development of a productive writing culture within the vocational education environment.

Abstract

This Community Service Program (PKM) aims to enhance teachers' creativity in designing innovative, entrepreneurship-based learning at SMK Negeri 1 Tinambung. Situation analysis revealed that the school’s teaching methods remain predominantly conventional, limiting student engagement and motivation, which is essential for modern educational demands. To address this, the proposed solutions included teacher creativity enhancement training, assistance in integrating technology into teaching, and the formation of an innovative learning community. The program successfully increased teachers' knowledge and skills in applying entrepreneurship-based learning strategies and educational technology, despite time and facility limitations. Results indicate improved teacher ability to create relevant, inspiring lessons, positively impacting students’ learning motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' competence and entrepreneurship through skills training on the use of Total Station at SMKN 5 Majene. Despite adequate school facilities, the curriculum related to surveying technology, especially the use of Total Station, is still underemphasized, even though this tool is standard in modern construction projects. This program conducted training and workshops involving lecturers who are mapping survey experts. In addition, this program also equips students with entrepreneurial knowledge, opens up career opportunities in the surveying and mapping sector, and increases the competitiveness of graduates in the work industry. The methods used include practical training, ongoing coaching, and comprehensive evaluation to ensure objectives are achieved. The results obtained are that the participants (students) of SMKN 5 Majene have the knowledge and skills in operating a Total Station and have entrepreneurial knowledge who are ready to work and able to utilize their technical skills in the world of work in the field of construction and surveying, which is also expected to contribute to the development of the local economy.

Abstract

Scientific writing training was conducted at SMAN 7 Sinjai as an effort to improve the competence of educators in writing scientific articles. This activity was motivated by the low ability of teachers to conduct research and write research results in the format of articles that can be published in reputable journals. This programme was implemented for eight months using online and offline training methods, including licensing, site preparation, socialisation, training, mentoring, and evaluation. The results of the activities showed that the training participants successfully gained an understanding of scientific article writing techniques, including literature searches, the use of tools such as the Mendeley application, and writing formats according to journal standards. In addition, the teachers successfully drafted scientific articles for publication submission. This programme is expected to contribute to improving teachers' professionalism and motivate them to contribute to the development of science through scientific publications.

Abstract

Training on the Use of Geodetic GPS is a form of community service aimed at enhancing the technical competencies of vocational high school students in the field of surveying and mapping. Amid the rapid advancement of geospatial technologies, vocational schools face significant challenges in providing training based on modern equipment, resulting in a skills gap between graduates’ competencies and industry demands. This initiative was motivated by the low proficiency of students in operating modern geospatial measurement tools, which are increasingly essential in the professional field. The community service activity was conducted in partnership with SMK Negeri 1 Takalar, targeting 11th and 12th grade students of the Building Information Design and Modeling (DPIB) program. The training employed an experiential learning approach, consisting of concise theoretical instruction, field practice, and a mini-project involving the creation of maps using GPS-based data. A pre-post test evaluation method was explicitly used to assess improvements in students’ knowledge and skills before and after the training. The results showed a significant increase in the understanding of basic GNSS concepts and in students' abilities to collect and process coordinate data. Post-test scores improved by 63% compared to pre-test results, and all student groups successfully completed an independent simple mapping project. This activity also boosted students’ confidence and had a positive impact on their job readiness. The results indicate that hands-on training is highly effective in bridging the competency gap between vocational education and industry requirements, and that this approach should be further developed through a more comprehensive series of training programs.
