Abstract

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of image media in improving the understanding of third grade elementary school students in science and science learning on the material "Are All Animals the Same". The research method uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design. The research subjects were 40 class III students at SDN 30 Palembang consisting of 20 experimental class students (11 boys and 9 girls) and 20 control class students (10 boys and 10 girls). The research instrument was a multiple choice comprehension test with 10 questions given before and after learning. The experimental class uses image media, while the control class uses conventional methods. Data were analyzed using the Independent Sample t-test via the SPSS application. The results showed a significant increase in the experimental class with a pre-test average of 62.50 to a post-test of 86.00, while the control class increased from 61.50 to 70.00 (gain 13.82%). The results of the Independent Sample t-test show a significant difference between the experimental and control group post-test (p < 0.05) with a calculated t-value = 7.856. This research confirms that image media is effective in increasing third grade students' understanding in science and science learning, especially because of its suitability to the concrete operational cognitive development stages of elementary school students.
