Abstract

The problem of malnutrition in toddlers remains a public helath challenge that requires educational interventions based on behavioral change. The low nutritional knowledge of mothers regarding toddler feeding and the less than optimal utilization of local foods are factors that affect children’s nutritional status. The Emotional Demonstration (Emo Demo) activity is an educational method based on behavioral change that uses an emotional approach and interactive demonstrations to improve the understanding of toddler mothers. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and practice of toddler mothers regarding the prevention of malnutrition through the Emo Demo method by utilizing local foods in Kaliwungu District. The implementation method uses participatory education through demonstrations, educational games, toddler finger food simulations, and local food processing practices such as dragon’s feet. The activity participants were 40 toddler mothers and helath cadres. Evalutions was carried out using a pretest and posttest of knowledge. Data analysis used a paired t-test. The results showed an average knowledge score increased from 60,85 ± 9,74 to 83,10 ± 7,92 with a p value  0,001 (p= <0,05). Furthhermore, the practice of utilizing local food increased from 52,5% to 80 %. The Emo Demo activity proved effective in increasing mother’s understanding of toddler’s malnutrition prevetion and the use of local food as a nutritious food source for toddlers.     ABSTRAK Masalah kurang gizi pada Balita masih menjadi tantangan kesehatan masyarakat yang memerlukan intervensi edukasi berbasis perubahan perilaku. Abstract

Background: Knowledge and attitudes toward reading nutrition facts labels are important factors in the prevention of metabolic diseases, particularly prediabetes. Adolescents, as a vulnerable age group, often pay limited attention to nutritional information on food packaging, thereby increasing the risk of unhealthy dietary behaviors. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the level of knowledge and attitudes toward reading nutrition facts labels and the incidence of prediabetes among adolescents aged 16–18 years. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 62 adolescents aged 16–18 years in Weleri, selected using a simple random sampling technique. The research instruments included questionnaires assessing knowledge of nutrition facts labels and attitudes toward reading nutrition facts labels, as well as random blood glucose testing to determine prediabetes status. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The findings showed that most respondents had poor knowledge of nutrition facts labels (54.8%) and poor attitudes toward reading nutrition facts labels (56.5%). The prevalence of prediabetes among adolescents in this study was 53.2%. There was a significant association between knowledge level (OR = 0.047; 95% CI = 0.013–0.172; p = 0.000) and attitudes toward reading nutrition facts labels (OR = 0.021; 95% CI = 0.005–0.096; p = 0.000) and the incidence of prediabetes among adolescents. Conclusion: The Chi-square test results demonstrated a significant relationship between knowledge of nutrition facts labels and the incidence of prediabetes (p = 0.000), as well as between attitudes toward reading nutrition facts labels and the incidence of prediabetes (p = 0.000).

Abstract

Toddlers are a group vulnerable to various nutritional problems caused by changes in physiological function. One of the nutritional problems that occurs is stunting. The prevalence of stunting in Kendal Regency in 2023 will reach 11.4%. The cause of this problem is the mother's nutritional parenting patterns and inappropriate fulfillment of nutritional needs for toddlers. In fact, Kendal Regency is a coastal area that has the potential for abundant fish as a source of animal protein. This fish can be used as a basic ingredient for making complementary foods for breast milk (MP-ASI) for stunted children. Providing this complementary food can be done by modifying processed products in the form of catfish and shrimp as animal protein with the addition of tofu as a source of vegetable protein. This preparation can be made into a dragon's foot product which is one of toddlers' favorite foods. This community service aims to provide education to mothers of toddlers so they can make MP ASI independently using local basic ingredients. The methods in this activity are opening, presentation of material, demonstration of making MP ASI from local food ingredients 2 animal 1 vegetable, discussion and evaluation. A total of 37 participants took part in this activity, who had filled out a questionnaire. The results show that there has been an increase in knowledge of making MP ASI using local food ingredients.

Abstract

Stunting in toddlers is still a special concern, especially in Kendal Regency. One of the causes of stunting is the mother's knowledge about providing inappropriate complementary feeding. In fact, Kendal Regency has local food ingredients in the form of mackerel which is an alternative to prevent stunting. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the mother's knowledge about the use of local food sources in preventing stunting. The purpose of this Community Service activity is to increase knowledge by providing Stunting Education through the "O'KE" Snack Demo for Toddler Mothers in Bulak Village, Rowosari, Kendal. The method in this activity is a lecture and an emo demonstration of making meatball snacks made from mackerel. Mothers of toddlers were also given a questionnaire to determine the knowledge score before and after the activity. The results of the data collection were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test (p≤0.05). The results of the activity showed a significant increase in the average score before (81±9.1) and after the emo demo activity (100±0.0). These results prove that providing stunting education through emo demos is effective in increasing the knowledge of mothers of toddlers. The demo given is expected to train mothers in processing fish-based snacks to prevent stunting in toddlers. Thus, toddlers can grow optimally.

Abstract

Background The prevalence of stunting in Kendal Regency remains relatively high. Risk factors that may increase the likelihood of stunting include nutritional knowledge and feeding practices. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between nutritional knowledge and feeding practices with the incidence of stunting among children aged 24–59 months. Method A total of 143 mothers of under-five children participated in this cross-sectional study using a proportional sampling technique. Data were collected using questionnaires on nutritional knowledge and feeding practices, as well as children’s nutritional status data obtained from the Child Health Card (KMS). Fisher’s exact test with a significance level of p ≤ 0.05 was used to analyze the data. Results A total of 24.5% of children were categorized as stunted. Mothers with good nutritional knowledge accounted for 77.6%, and 67.8% had appropriate feeding practices. No significant relationship was found between nutritional knowledge and the incidence of stunting (OR = 0.964; 95% CI = 0.388–2.396; p = 1.00), and no relationship was found between feeding practices and the incidence of stunting (OR = 0.881; 95% CI = 0.393–1.975; p = 0.836). Conclusion Nutritional knowledge and feeding patters are not associated with incidence of stunting in toddlers in the Patebon 2 Kendal Puskesmas Working Area.
