Abstract

This study aims to assess extension needs to accelerate the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices as a climate change mitigation strategy in Nort Bulango District, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia. Using a mixed methods approach, the research integrates quantitative and qualitative data collected from 248 corn farmers across eight villages. The Borinch Needs Assessment (BNA) model is applied, incorporating innovation attributes and decision making stages from the Diffusion of Innovations Theory as the analytical framework. The assessment focuses on nine key components of sustainable agriculture, including reduced chemical fertilizer use, adoption of organic fertilizers, soil cultivitation use, chemical herbicide use, and waste management. Results indicate that soil tillage, particularly plowing, ranks as the top extention priority in five villages, revealing as significant gap between its perceived importance and farmers actual knowledge. The continued use of intensive plowing contributes to long term soil degradation and icreases erosion, yet farmer awareness of these impacts remains low. In addition, the widespread use of chemical herbicides and the limited application of organic fertilizers emerged as critical areas requiring targeted intervention. The findings underscore the need for responsive, context specific agricultural extension programs to promote sustainable farmis techiniques. Strengthening farmer knowledge and awareness through tailored extension service is essential for advancing environmentally sound agriculture and enhancing local adaptive capacity to climate change. This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating how the Borinch Needs Assessment (BNA) model can be strategically applied within a climate change dengan mitigation framework to identity and prioritize extension needs in developing country contexts.

Abstract

Organic farming is crucial for the sustainability of coastal ecosystems, yet its adoption in Bone Bolango Regency remains low due to suboptimal extension strategies. This study employs a mixed methods approach aimed at: (1) identifying priority materials for farmers in Bone Bolango; (2) analyzing extension need gaps; and (3) formulating participatory extension strategies to accelerate the adoption of organic farming. Data were collected through a survey of 366 farmers and in-depth interviews with 20 key informants. The analysis employed the Rank Discrepancy Score (RDS) to measure gap needs and thematic analysis for qualitative data. Results indicate that farmers prioritize technical materials, specifically pest and disease control (RDS = 4.21) and organic fertilization (RDS = 3.87), while institutional aspects are considered less urgent. The Wilcoxon test confirmed a significant gap (p < 0.001) between the importance of materials and farmers’ current understanding. This study recommends reorienting extension strategies to be more participatory and focused on practical technical solutions to enhance organic farming adoption in coastal areas.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program was conducted by lecturers and students of the Faculty of Agriculture, Gorontalo State University, under the theme “Enhancing the Capacity of Agricultural Extension Workers and Farmers through the Digitalization of Extension Materials in Ulanta Village, Suwawa District, Bone Bolango Regency.” The program was motivated by the low level of digital literacy among extension workers and farmers, as well as the absence of a structured and sustainable system for documenting and distributing agricultural extension materials in digital form. The main objective was to improve the participants’ ability to utilize digital technology as an effective, interactive, and accessible medium for agricultural extension. The activity employed a participatory and learning-by-doing approach, consisting of several stages: needs assessment, technical training on the use of Canva and CapCut applications, practical sessions for producing digital content, and the establishment of a WhatsApp Group as a community-based extension platform. Evaluation was conducted through pre-tests and post-tests to measure the improvement in participants’ knowledge and skills. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ digital competencies, where the farmers’ average post-test score rose from 13.35% to 76.24%, and the extension workers’ score increased from 22.4% to 95.9%. Participants successfully produced two types of digital extension materials (a short video and an infographic) and actively used the WhatsApp Group to share agricultural information. The program also resulted in a transformation of the extension workers’ role—from conventional information providers to digital facilitators—and fostered greater independence among farmers in accessing and producing agricultural information. In conclusion, the program effectively enhanced the digital literacy and technical skills of extension workers and farmers, strengthened information exchange through digital communication platforms, and demonstrated the potential for developing a sustainable model of digital agricultural extension at the village level.
