Abstract

ABSTRACT Burn injuries are common incidents in the community and can lead to serious consequences if not properly managed. Lack of knowledge regarding first aid for burns may increase the risk of complications and worsen the condition. This community service program aims to improve public knowledge and skills in providing first aid for burn injuries. The method used was a participatory educational approach through counseling, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. The activity involved 50 community participants. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test as well as skill observation. The results showed an increase in knowledge from an average score of 54.6 to 83.8. Participants also demonstrated improved skills in proper burn first aid management. In conclusion, burn first aid education is effective in improving community safety. Abstract

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, and sudden cardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate management through Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The low survival rate of patients is often attributed to insufficient knowledge and preparedness among healthcare professionals in performing CPR. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between nurses’ level of knowledge and their readiness to perform CPR in the ICU of Grandmed Hospital, Lubuk Pakam. A quantitative method with a cross-sectional and correlational design was employed. The study population included all 19 ICU nurses, selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire covering respondent characteristics, CPR knowledge based on American Heart Association (AHA) standards, and readiness to respond to emergency situations. Univariate analysis revealed that the majority of respondents were female (68.4%), aged 20–29 years (68.4%), held a professional nursing degree (63.2%), had 1–5 years of work experience (63.2%), and more than half had never attended CPR training (52.6%). Furthermore, 84.2% of nurses demonstrated good knowledge, and 78.9% were categorized as highly ready. The Spearman’s rho test indicated a strong and significant positive correlation between knowledge and readiness (r = 0.629; p = 0.004). In conclusion, the higher the nurses’ level of knowledge regarding CPR, the better their readiness to handle sudden cardiac arrest in the ICU.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country prone to natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, and fires. These conditions require community preparedness, especially for volunteers, in dealing with emergencies. Volunteers are often the first to arrive at disaster sites, requiring adequate knowledge and skills in disaster management and first aid (P3K). However, many volunteers still lack an optimal understanding and skills in first aid. This Community Service activity aims to improve volunteers' knowledge and preparedness through disaster management and first aid training. Implementation methods include theoretical training, interactive discussions, first aid simulations and practices, and evaluation through pre- and post-tests. The results of the activity indicate a significant increase in volunteers' knowledge and preparedness in dealing with disaster situations and administering first aid. This activity is expected to enhance volunteers' capacity to support disaster management effectively and safely.
