The research aimed to investigate the effectiveness or ineffectiveness in implementing an academic word list and its implication for improving English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ writing quality. Academic Word List (AWL) played an important role in expanding the student’s academic vocabulary knowledge. Basically, an academic word list was considered one of the effective ways to reduce students’ errors in writing. The research was proposed to review several related preceding studies, and the data found were described qualitatively. From the research conducted, it is found that fifteen out of eighteen studies (83,33%) confirm that the implementation of academic word lists provides a significant contribution to the improvement of students’ writing quality. On the other hand, three out of eighteen studies (16,67%) confirm that implementing an academic word list does not significantly contribute to improving students’ academic word knowledge. This may be attributable to the given portion of the academic word list utilized as supplementary material, and it can only be used outside the classroom without any teacher guidance. The result shows that implementing the academic word list may act as an effective/ineffective tool for improving students’ academic writing quality based on the portion and utilization of this tool in the course.

It has been commonly known that in this era, many Islamic boarding schools are trying to provide English learning program in order to improve the quality of Islamic boarding school graduates. Many studies have been conducted to observe how English learning is run in Islamic boarding school to succeed the goal in mastering English for the students. This present study would like to complete the previous studies by conducting the investigation on how English learning process in Al Khodijah Dorm and what are the obstacles faced by the teachers and students during running the English dormitory programs. This research employed qualitative methodology to describe the whole data got by using observation, documentation and interviews as the instruments of studies. This recent study found that to succeed the English learning and teaching activities in Al Khodijah dorm, it was conducted the interesting morning English program. English materials, English learning media, English area and the assessment has also been settled well by the language department of Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding School to support students’ English learning. They obstacles faced by the students and tutors were concluded by two kinds of problem namely difficulty of time managing to learn and lack of motivation to learn English.

Pesantren Sunan Drajat is one of Islamic boarding schools that has commitment to afford the excellent educational programs. Many efforts have been done to meet the aim of successful education, such as providing the good facilities and qualified educators. Qualified educators become one of the essential factors that determines the success of education. Many studies have been conducted to prove the tight correlation between students’ accomplishment and the quality of educators. Therefore, English dormitories, which are provided by pesantren Sunan Drajat to facilitate the students who wants to improve their English skill, have strong effort to provide the good qualified English tutors to attain the great students’ achievements. This current study aims to investigate how English dormitories of Sunan Drajat manage the human resource in order to improve the quality of their English tutors through their upgrading programs. Qualitative research methodology through observation, interview and documentation was employed to obtain the whole data about how upgrading programs run. This study resulted that upgrading program is kind of teacher training program which is chosen to improve the quality of human resource in English language dormitories of pesantren Sunan Drajat. That program contains of some useful activities such as training to make innovative and interesting English lesson planning, learning English materials handled by one English expert to upgrade the English skill of tutors, preparing teaching media, microteaching, and teaching evaluation. Overall, the challenges are still found during implementing upgrading program, namely lack of tutors’ awareness and motivation to improve the quality of themselves.

Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding School is one of the famous Islamic boarding schools located in Lamongan district. As an Islamic boarding school that has thousands of students, Pondok Pesantren Sunan Drajat continues to strive to improve the quality of the students. Various activities are carried out to produce quality and competitive Islamic boarding school graduates. One of the superior programs at the Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding School is the provision of an English language dormitory to support students in improving their foreign language skills. In the process of implementing English language learning activities for students, tutors often face various problems. One of the problems that often occurs is that students often appear unenthusiastic and less active in practicing speaking during the classroom learning process. This causes confusion among tutors about what methods are effective to apply in order to make all students in the class more active to speak English. With the aim of providing a reference to the tutors regarding a method that can be applied to encourage students to actively speak in class as a form of problem solving, coaching was held for the tutors regarding the application of teaching methods whose effectiveness has been proven for speaking skill in many previous studies, namely "Pair Work" method. This coaching activity is carried out by providing detailed explanations regarding the systematic application of the "Pair Work" method according to various topics that will be used by the tutors to teach the students. Direct control of the class was also carried out to find out the extent of changes that occurred after the tutors applied the "Pair Work" method in class.

It is truthfully common that all colleges in Indonesia put English as the compulsory subject that must be learnt to improve the quality of alumni which enable them to compete in their future career. This study aims to find the perception of three Indonesian alumni of non-English department on English learning in university and their perspective on the use of English in their workplace based on their current self-experiences. This study employed a narrative inquiry design while the data were collected by using semi-structured interviews. Lastly, the data found were descriptively analyzed. The result of the present study confirms that three participants basically have awareness about the importance of English for their future career since they were in academic years, but their positive perspective turns to be slightly negative since they feel unsatisfied with the English teaching at college in the term of the materials taught and the method applied. However, their positive perspective about the importance of English in various sectors is strengthened by their real experience after coming to the career life. The result of this study is expected to give the new insight for students who are in the university-academic years about the urgency to learn English even though they are not majoring at English department and hopefully can be feedback for English lecturers who teach in non-English major to do improvement of teaching method and materials. The upcoming study expectantly can be conducted to investigate the comparation of the English needs between fresh graduate alumni and experienced alumni.

This community service (PKM) activity aims to improve students’ speaking skill and to foster a full awareness of the importance of using English in their daily lives at the female dormitory of the Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding School. English is an international language studied at almost all levels of education, both formal and informal. This clearly plays a crucial role in communication, especially in the globalization era now. Aware of the importance of English, the Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding School has implemented an English Area. For the English Area to run effectively, students' English language skill and competencies are required. Therefore, the morning class and the upgrading class are held to support the students' English learning. Although the English classes are held, students' awareness of English is still low. It is be a challenge itself to habituate students to speak English in their daily lives. Therefore, this community service (PKM) activity was held using several instruments; observation, interview, and documentation to determine the condition of English learning process and the students’ English skill. Then, coaching and training were carried out on the application of Fun English strategy for the tutors of female dormitory at the Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding School. The Fun English strategy implemented includes; the application of flashcards, word chains & charades in English learning. This Fun English strategy aims to motivate the students and make them interested in learning English. It is proven that after the Fun English activity was held, the students' vocabulary mastery and speaking skills increased and they began to habituate themselves to speak English with correct & appropriate sentence structure in their daily activities.
