Abstract

Climate change is an environmental issue and a major concern for the global community, impacting various sectors, including the livestock sector. This study aims to assess the sustainability of smallholder beef cattle farming businesses in dryland areas affected by climate change in Tambakrejo District, Bojonegoro Regency. The research method is a quantitative descriptive, involving direct field surveys and interviews with smallholder farmers. A total of 100 respondents were purposively selected with the criteria active members of a farmers’ group and having ≥ 1 cattle. The data analysis used was Rapfish with five dimensions, namely the ecological, economic, social, technological, and legal and institutional dimensions that are customized to the specific research area to provide an accurate representation of the present state. The results show that the ecological, economic, and technological dimensions are in quite sustainable category, and the social and legal and institutional dimensions are in highly sustainable category. Climate change affects forage and water availability, and drought frequency affects the sustainability score. Addressing these challenges requires enhanced ecological, financial support, and appropriate policy interventions. This study provides insights into resilience strategies for smallholder beef cattle farming aligned with SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) in Indonesia

Abstract

The broiler industry plays a critical role in Indonesia’s food supply chain, yet productivity challenges persist, particularly in partnership-based closed-house systems. This study examines the influence of production inputs on broiler output using data from 50 contract farmers in Malang Regency through multiple linear regression, LASSO regression, and elasticity analysis. Severe multicollinearity was detected among chicken population, feed quantity, and total cost (VIF > 100), addressed using LASSO regularization. The resulting adjusted R² of 0.9994 is unusually high for cross-sectional socio-economic data and should therefore be interpreted cautiously due to potential overfitting. Regression results indicate that number of employees, depletion rate, and performance index significantly contribute to production volume, while chicken population and feed quantity have negative and statistically non-significant coefficients. Elasticity analysis shows that significant input variables, except performance index, are inelastic (coefficients < 1), whereas performance index is elastic (1.899). The counterintuitive negative coefficients for population and feed, alongside the positive depletion coefficient, suggest residual multicollinearity and conceptual overlap between performance index and other inputs, which future work should address through model re-specification. These findings nonetheless highlight labor management, mortality control, and performance monitoring as priority areas for improving productivity in partnership-based closed-house broiler systems in Indonesia.

Abstract

Enteric methane from ruminants contributes approximately 30% of global methane emissions, necessitating effective mitigation strategies. Rumen protozoa, as primary hosts for methanogenic archaea, represent a key target, with inhibition of their fibrolytic enzymes particularly endo-1,4-β-xylanase emerging as a promising approach. This study investigated the inhibitory potential of eleven saponin compounds identified from Albizia chinensis leaf powder via LC-MS analysis against rumen protozoa endo-1,4-β-xylanase (Epidinium ecaudatum, UniProt: B7FBK8) using molecular docking. The protein's 3D structure was retrieved from UniProt, ligand structures from PubChem, and blind docking was performed using PyRx (AutoDock Vina). Protein-ligand interactions were visualized using BIOVIA Discovery Studio 2019. Results demonstrated that Albiziasaponin B exhibited the highest binding affinity (−10.541 kcal/mol) with 12 hydrogen bonds, followed by Albiziasaponin A (−10.496 kcal/mol) and Albiziatrioside A (−10.424 kcal/mol). Notably, hydrogen bond geometry quality proved more critical than quantity; Acacioside A showed reduced affinity despite 11 hydrogen bonds due to unfavorable donor-donor interactions at ARG135. Hydrophobic and Van der Waals interactions contributed significantly to complex stability. These findings suggest saponins from Albizia chinensis as promising plant-based feed additive candidates for sustainable enteric methane mitigation, warranting further in vitro and in vivo validation.
