Abstract

Abstract

Synthesis of Ag2S from AgCl waste of argentometric titration with heating temperature variations as a temperature sensor has been done. This study aims to synthesize Ag2S and examine the effect of heating temperature on crystal quality and electrical characteristics as a temperature sensor based on the Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC). Ag2S synthesis was carried out by precipitation in a water bath with various heating temperatures of 40°C, 60°C, and 80°C. The success of the synthesis was confirmed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) with a typical peak of 2θ from Ag2S standard at 29.07°, 31.60°, 36.97°, 37.81°, and the highest crystallinity was obtained at a heating temperature of 60°C. Meanwhile, UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS UV-Vis) showed a band gap corresponding to Ag2S (0.9-1.05 eV). Furthermore, the Ag2S powder was made into pellets and applied as a temperature sensor. Then the resistance value and the electrical characteristics of the resulting sensor were measured. The best resistance was obtained from Ag2S synthesized at a temperature of 60°C with constant (B) and sensitivity (α) values of 2974 K and −3.35%, respectively. This indicated that Ag2S had been successfully synthesized, and the best sensor quality was obtained from Ag2S heated at a temperature of 60°C.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance renewable energy literacy and improve the skills of chemistry teachers at Madrasah Aliyah (MA) in DKI Jakarta in developing a hydrogen fuel cell model based on polymer electrolyte membrane (PEMFC) technology. The training was conducted in three stages: preliminary, implementation, and evaluation. The initial stage involved a needs analysis and data collection on teachers’ understanding of fuel cell technology. The implementation stage consisted of lectures, discussions, simulations, assignments, and direct observation of participants’ practical skills in designing the fuel cell model. The evaluation stage assessed the training materials, instructors, and participants to determine the program’s effectiveness. The results showed a significant improvement in teachers’ conceptual understanding and practical competence in integrating hydrogen fuel cell technology into chemistry learning. This program is expected to foster innovative teachers capable of utilising renewable energy technology in classroom practice and improving the quality of students’ academic assessment.

Abstract

Scientific literacy among high school students needs to be strengthened through contextual and experiential learning that connects scientific concepts with their applications in everyday life. This community service program aimed to support teachers in developing experiment-based learning activities to enhance students’ scientific literacy through the utilization of coconut oil and beeswax as thermal energy storage materials. The activities consisted of scientific material delivery, experiments involving coconut oil and beeswax, assembly of a simple mini cooler prototype, and observation and temperature measurement. The results showed that participants' understanding of phase change and energy concepts improved, with an average post-test score of 98.75; furthermore, participants successfully produced a mini cooler prototype based on coconut oil and beeswax. The prototype can be utilized as a learning medium to introduce phase changes, heat transfer, and thermal energy storage concepts. The activity also provided teachers with an applicable approach to designing experimental learning that encourages students to observe phenomena, interpret experimental data, and apply scientific concepts to real-life situations. This program demonstrates the potential of locally available materials and simple experimental technology to support the development of innovative science learning and strengthen scientific literacy among high school students.
