Abstract

Abstract

The Qur’an contains many symbolic narratives, necessitating a reading that goes beyond the literal and requires an interpretive unpacking of meaning. This study is motivated by the importance of understanding the Qur’an in an open-minded manner. This research is a qualitative library study. The method employs descriptive-analytical analysis using sources from classical exegesis, contemporary exegesis, and other relevant books. The data will be analyzed through Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic semiotic framework. The research findings indicate that sandals are not merely interpreted as footwear but as a symbol of humanity’s connection to the profane world. From the semiotic analysis, the sandal as a representament reflects the human condition of Prophet Moses; as an object, it points to worldly attachment; and as an interpretant, it gives rise to a spiritual meaning: the necessity for Moses to purify himself before entering the sacred space, namely the Valley of Tuwa. The command fa-khla‘ na‘layka (فَاخْلَعْ نَعْلَيْكَ) is interpreted as a symbol of existential transformation toward a servant’s readiness to receive revelation. Therefore, this research contributes to the development of semiotic-based interpretation and can provide implications that sacredness is not enough to be realized only through external symbols, but through inner awareness, reverence when facing God which is likened to wearing a mukena for a woman.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze patriarchal leadership regeneration at the Darussalam Martapura Islamic Boarding School through the perspective of Max Weber’s theory of traditional and charismatic authority. The study was conducted because previous research has predominantly examined either the charisma of religious leaders or family-based succession separately, leaving the interaction between these two dimensions in the reproduction of patriarchal leadership insufficiently explained. Method: This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving pesantren leaders, members of the founding family, administrators, teachers, students, alumni, and community leaders. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Results: The findings reveal that leadership succession is primarily inherited by sons or male relatives of the founding family through family deliberation and consultation with senior pesantren figures. Leadership legitimacy is established through lineage, tradition, and community trust as forms of traditional authority. However, successors are also required to demonstrate religious competence, piety, authority, and charisma to gain broader acceptance. Novelty: This study finds that the reproduction of patriarchy in pesantren leadership is sustained not only through genealogical inheritance but also through charismatic legitimacy. The combination of traditional and charismatic authority reinforces the acceptance of male dominance as a legitimate and natural pattern of leadership succession within the pesantren.

Abstract

The rapid growth of the Islamic bullion business in Indonesia has not been accompanied by adequate sharia regulatory frameworks, prompting the issuance of Fatwa DSN-MUI No. 166/DSN-MUI/II/2026 on Sharia Bullion Business Activities. This study aims to analyze the construction of this fatwa through the lens of Talcott Parsons' AGIL scheme, examining the extent to which the fatwa functions not merely as a normative Islamic legal product, but as a complete and functional social system within Indonesia's Islamic financial ecosystem. Employing a qualitative approach with library research design, data were collected through documentary analysis of the fatwa text, relevant regulations, and academic literature, analyzed using Parsons' four functional imperatives: Adaptation, Goal Attainment, Integration, and Latency. The findings reveal that the fatwa simultaneously fulfills all four AGIL functions. The Adaptation function is evidenced by the fatwa's responsiveness to Law No. 4/2023, POJK No. 17/2024, and digital transaction developments, particularly through the innovation of qabdh hukmi as an adaptation of classical fiqh to digital finance. Goal Attainment is demonstrated through the legitimization of valid contracts and the explicit prohibition of riba, gharar, and maysir. The Integration function operates through synchronization between DSN-MUI authority and OJK regulation, harmonizing classical muamalah fiqh with Indonesian positive law. The Latency function reproduces Islamic values by positioning gold as sil'ah and reinforcing normative prohibitions in economic practice. Among the four functions, integration and latency are identified as the most strategic yet most vulnerable. This study contributes a sociological dimension to Islamic law scholarship and recommends strengthening institutional coordination between DSN-MUI, OJK, and Islamic financial institutions for optimal fatwa implementation
