Abstract

Zakat-based economic empowerment programs serve as a vital instrument in enhancing the welfare of mustahik (zakat recipients) in Indonesia, particularly amid the persistent challenges of poverty. The Nurul Hayat Zakat Management Institution (LAZ) in Jember implements the Ternak Domba Sejahtera (TDS) or Prosperous Sheep Farming Program as an initiative to utilize productive zakat in supporting the income of mustahik. This study focuses on analyzing the business model of the TDS program in order to optimize the management of productive zakat and drive the economic transformation of mustahik. The research is centered on three main aspects: the management of the TDS program by LAZ Nurul Hayat Jember, changes in mustahik income after participating in the program, and an analysis of the implementation of the Business Model Canvas (BMC) in the program. The objective of this research is to describe the management process of the TDS program, analyze its impact on mustahik income, and evaluate the application of the BMC within the program. This study aims to provide strategic recommendations for optimizing the productive zakat business model within zakat management institutions. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation at LAZ Nurul Hayat Jember as well as with mustahik beneficiaries in Curah Manis Hamlet, Sidomulyo Village, Silo Sub-district, Jember. Data validity was maintained through triangulation of sources and techniques. The research findings reveal that the management of the TDS program involves intensive mentoring, the distribution of capital in the form of sheep, and regular monitoring by the LAZ team. The income of mustahik increased significantly after participating in the program, supported by a profit-sharing system and entrepreneurship training. The implementation of the BMC effectively maps out the nine key business elements, such as customer segments, value propositions, channels, and key activities. Synergy with local partners and efficient cost management strengthen the sustainability of the program. However, challenges remain in the areas of marketing and the capacity building of mustahik. The analysis of the Business Model Canvas in the management of the TDS program has proven effective in increasing mustahik income and reinforcing the productive zakat empowerment model at LAZ Nurul Hayat Jember, although innovation is still needed in marketing strategies and in enhancing the entrepreneurial capacity of mustahik.

Abstract

Islam, as a religion embodying rahmatan lil 'alamin (mercy to all creation), strongly emphasizes the preservation of human welfare, including faith, life, mental health, lineage, and property. This qualitative study, grounded in a post-positivist paradigm and phenomenology, explores the lived experiences of community members involved in smart farming empowerment in Bondowoso Regency. Focusing on the innovative "Subur Berkah" livestock village, data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with Baznas representatives and locals, and documentation. Snowball sampling identified informants with rich experiential knowledge. The researcher acted as the primary instrument, ensuring authentic engagement and data collection. Data analysis employed the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, involving condensation, display, and iterative conclusion drawing. Findings reveal that Baznas transforms zakat from charity into productive empowerment by identifying beneficiaries, delivering intensive training, and maintaining ongoing support, fostering economic and social independence. Smart farming innovations such as integrated housing, fermented feed, data-driven health management, and digital tools enhance livestock productivity and income. This participatory empowerment model significantly advances sustainable development goals by addressing poverty, food security, employment, inequality, and promoting environmentally sustainable, technology-driven rural development.

Abstract

Productive waqf is one of the Islamic social finance instruments that holds significant potential to promote inclusive economic development. However, in many regions, its management practices remain largely consumptive and have not yet been integrated across multiple sectors. This study seeks to reconstruct the paradigm of productive waqf through a case study of Masjid Al-Huda as a model of multi sectoral management in developing an inclusive economic ecosystem within rural communities. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach employing participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation techniques for data collection. The findings indicate that the management of productive waqf at Masjid Al-Huda is implemented through a structured POAC framework (Planning, Organizing, Actuating, and Controlling), supported by RAPBM instruments, ijarah contracts, accountable financial administration, and supervision grounded in both administrative governance and local wisdom. The waqf assets, encompassing 12.7 hectares of land, are strategically managed to generate and distribute benefits across the agricultural, educational, and micro-enterprise sectors. A major finding of this study is the emergence of an economic magnet effect, whereby waqf investment in the educational sector organically stimulates economic demand for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) within the surrounding community. This model demonstrates that mosque-based productive waqf management in rural areas can function as a catalyst for inclusive economic growth by simultaneously empowering farmers, educators, and micro-entrepreneurs.
