Abstract

The illness known as asthma is typified by persistent inflammation of the airways involving  various types of mediators and inflammatory cells that are interrelated and cause changes in the shape and structure of the airways. One method of treating asthma is balloon blowing therapy. The aims of this study was to examine the effect of ballon blowing therapy on respiratory rete and oxygen saturation in asthma patients undergoing treatment at Grandmed Hospital, Lubuk Pakam. This quasi experimental study used one group pretest-posttest design. Data collection was conducted using purposive sampling. The baloon blowing exercise intervention was administered to 23 asthma sufferers undergoing reatment at Grandmed Hospital, Lubuk Pakam. Data collection was conducted using observation sheets and an intervention, namely ballon blowing, was administered to asthma patients undergoing treatment. Oxygen saturation and respiratory rate measurements were conducted twice : before and after the balloon blowing intervention. The results were recorded on the observation sheets. From the statistical test conducted using the paired test, the p value was 0,000 for the respiration rate and oxygen saturation values p < α (0,000 < 0,05). These results indicated that there was increase in oxygen saturation and better respiration rates in asthma patients undergoing treatment before and after balloon blowing intervention. It is hoped that patients suffering from asthma can do balloon blowing so that the oxygen saturation and respiration rates increase.
