Abstract

ABSTRACT Self-help skills such as urinating and defecating in children must be mastered early on because these skills will be used for life. In normal children, this ability can be achieved at the age of toddler (1-3 years), but in children with mental retardation will experience obstacles, this is because their intelligence capacity is below average but it can also be caused by sensory problems so they are difficult to communicating their needs. The role of caregivers to practice toilet and defecation (toilet training) skills in children with mental retardation is needed so that children can be independent and accepted in the community. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of toilet training assistance on the knowledge of childcare providers with mental retardation. Samples taken were 30 mentally retarded child caregivers at SLB B-C Hamong Putro Jombor Sukoharjo. Data collection techniques were carried out by filling out the toilet training knowledge questionnaire conducted before and after the intervention. Statistical test results with paired t-test p0,000 0.05, so it can be concluded that there is an effect of toilet training assistance on the caregivers of children with mental retardation in SLB-B-C Hamong Putro Jombor, Sukoharjo. ABSTRAK Keterampilan bantu diri seperti buang air kecil (BAK) dan buang air besar (BAB) pada anak harus di- kuasai sejak dini karena keterampilan tersebut akan digunakan seumur hidup. Pada anak normal kemampuan tersebut dapat dicapai saat usia toddler (1-3 tahun), namun pada anak dengan retardasi mental akan meng- alami hambatan, hal ini dikarenakan kapasitas kecerdasan mereka di bawah rata-rata selain itu juga dapat disebabkan oleh masalah sensori sehingga mereka sulit untuk mengkomunikasikan kebutuhan mereka. Peran pengasuh untuk melatih keterampilan BAK dan BAB (toilet training) pada anak dengan retardasi mental sangat dibutuhkan agar anak dapat mandiri dan diterima dalam lingkungan masyarakat. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengatahui pengaruh pendampingan toilet training pada pengetahuan pengasuh anak dengan retardasi mental. Sampel yang diambil adalah 30 orang pengasuh anak retardasi mental di SLB B-C Hamong Putro Jombor Sukoharjo. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan pengisian kuesioner pengetahuan toilet training yang dilakukan sebelum dan sesudah intervensi. Hasil uji statistik dengan paired t-test p0,000 0,05, sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada pengaruh pelatihan pendampingan toilet training pada pengetahuan pengasuh anak dengan retardasi mental di SLB- B-C Hamong Putro Jombor, Sukoharjo.
