Abstract

Abstract This study aims to determine the effect of self-control on impulsive buying behavior among student Pay Later users in Medan City. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The subjects consisted of 350 students who actively used Pay Later services and were selected using purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through Likert-scale psychological instruments measuring self-control and impulsive buying behavior. Data analysis was conducted using simple linear regression with a non-parametric bootstrapping approach through SPSS 20.0 for Windows. The results showed a significant negative effect of self-control on impulsive buying behavior, with a regression coefficient value of -0.197 and a significance value of 0.001 (p < 0.05). This indicates that the higher the students’ self-control, the lower their impulsive buying behavior. Self-control contributed 13.4% to impulsive buying behavior, while the remaining 86.6% was influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study. The categorization results revealed that most students had moderate levels of self-control (95.4%) and moderate levels of impulsive buying behavior (85.7%). These findings emphasize that self-control plays an important role in controlling students’ consumptive behavior amid the ease of digital transactions and Pay Later services.
