Abstract

The development of da’wah in the digital era indicates a fundamental shift from conventional models toward a social media–based ecosystem shaped by algorithmic mechanisms. This study aims to examine how the ecology of digital da’wah encompassing the interaction between algorithms, content, and communities contributes to shaping the religious behavior of Muslim adolescents. This research employs a qualitative approach using a digital netnography design combined with phenomenology to explore religious practices and experiences within virtual spaces. Data were collected through digital participant observation on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, semi-structured in-depth interviews with Muslim adolescents aged 15–24, and documentation analysis of digital da’wah content. Data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal a cyclical interaction pattern among algorithms, content, and communities in shaping adolescents’ religiosity in adaptive and selective ways. Algorithms function as curators that determine the level of exposure to religious content, while visually engaging, concise, and emotionally driven content tends to have a stronger influence on user preferences. Meanwhile, digital communities act as spaces for social validation that reinforce the internalization of religious values. These findings indicate that adolescent religiosity in the digital era is dynamic, contextual, and performative. Theoretically, this study contributes by developing an integrative perspective on the ecology of digital da’wah. Practically, it highlights the importance of da’wah strategies that are adaptive to algorithmic logic and social media dynamics. Furthermore, the findings underscore the urgency of strengthening digital literacy and media ethics in da’wah practices. Future research is recommended to test the proposed model using quantitative or interdisciplinary approaches.
