Abstract

Environmental cleanliness in densely populated coastal areas remains a critical issue, influenced not only by infrastructure but also by human behavior. This study examines the role of wayfinding and signage design in promoting environmental cleanliness in Makassar City. A quantitative approach was conducted through a survey of 174 respondents across four coastal locations in Makassar, Indonesia. The study measured environmental cleanliness, navigation and orientation, signage effectiveness, and design preference, and applied MANOVA and ANOVA to analyze differences across locations. The findings reveal that while navigation is generally adequate and signage is perceived as effective and visually appealing, environmental cleanliness remains low, indicating a gap between awareness and behavior. Significant differences were found in cleanliness, signage effectiveness, and design preference, but not in navigation. Based on these findings, the study proposes a design framework that enhances signage as a behavior-oriented communication system. This research highlights the importance of combining data-driven insights and design of wayfinding and signage to promote sustainable environmental behavior in coastal urban environments.
