Abstract

This paper examines the quality of translation of Affect by Google Translate on tourism texts from the Department of Culture and Tourism of Semarang website. This study explores Affect because it has been mostly studied in literary texts such as novels and films, and the translation and realization of Affect have barely been studied in tourism discourse. In addition, since tourism texts are of a domestic and an international nature, the translation of evaluative meanings must be taken into consideration. This study examines how Google Translate retains Affect in tourism promotion texts through appraisal analysis, translation techniques, and translation quality evaluation. The objective of this research is to identify the types of Affect, the translation techniques used, and the quality of Affect translation. Following that, as a descriptive qualitative study, linguistic and translation data are taken, analyzed through Spradley’s componential analysis. The results show that (1) Satisfaction, specifically pleasure, accounts as the main type of Affect, thus tourism texts develop pleasurable experiences for the purpose of drawing in tourists; (2) established equivalent is the key translation techniques, which highlights Google Translate’s practice of maintaining evaluative meanings by traditional lexical equivalence; and (3) the Affect has a high translation quality (average score of 2.99), confirming it is accurate, acceptable and can be understood despite one less acceptable translation produced. These results extend the research of appraisal theory to the discourse of tourism and provide empirical evidence indicating strengths and limitations of Google Translate for preserving evaluative meanings in bilingual tourism literature.
