Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the language used by Indonesian Migrants in Hong Kong (BMI HK) as contained in the Iqro and CahayaQu Magazines which were published in 2014. The collected data were, therefore, written data. Specifically, the research tried to identify the language used by the BMI HK to their mothers. The research focused on the attitudinal perspective which comprised one of the categories of the appraisal system. The identification included three attitudinal aspects, namely affect, judgment, and appreciation. The collected data consisted of written works made by the BMI HK as they were published in the rubrics of Surat Pembaca (Readers’ Letters), Curahan Hati (Sharing One’s feelings), Berbagi Hikmah (Sharing Wisdom), and Konsultasi Keluarga (Family Consultation). From those rubrics, five pieces of writing written by the BMI HK relating to their parents/ mothers were encountered. The research showed that the negative attitudinal lexis was outnumbered than the positive attitudinal one. Of the 164 data, 27.4% were positive attitudinal and 72.6% were negative attitudinal. When the data were calculated in detail, the percentage of affect was 46.4%, judgment 32.4%, and appreciation 21.3%. The presence of the higher negative data showed that there were problems faced by the writers (the BMI HK) and their parents.

Abstract

This research aims to describe: (1) the March 2015 National Geographic article Fleeing Terror, Finding Refuge and its March 2015 National Geographic Indonesia Indonesian translation Mencari Tempat Berlindung’s thematic structure and progression, (2) the translation techniques employed and its effect on the translation’s thematic structure and progression, and (3) its effect on the translation quality. This study belongs to the qualitative research at the descriptive level, employs embedded case study approach, and focuses on the translation product. The data consist of the Themes of the National Geographic Maret 2015 article Fleeing Terror, Finding Refuge and its National Geographic Indonesia Maret 2015 Indonesian translation Mencari Tempat Berlindung collected through content analysis and the result of the informant’s translation quality assessment collected through questionnaire and focus group discussion. This study revealed that the translation employs more marked Topical Theme than the source text and the percentage of the translation’s Rheme-based progressions (the simple linear and split Rheme progression) is higher than the source text’s. The thematic structure shifts—mostly a shift from the unmarked to the marked Topical Theme and vice-versa or a change in the Topical Theme constituent—can be caused by the use of these six translation techniques: transposition, modulation, reduction, amplification, established equivalent, and particularization. Of these six, particularization does not cause any Thematic progression shift. These six techniques that can cause a shift in the Thematic structure can also decrease the translation’s quality. Keywords: Thematic structure, Thematic progression, translation techniques, translation quality assessment

Abstract

Hedging devices are often used to express opinion rather than a fact of a proposition. Hedging devices are also expressing speaker uncertainty. What will happen when hedging devices are translated into the target language? Based on that question writer try to find out on how hedging devices are translated into target language using modulation technique. By using modulation technique, translator tries to understand the meaning of the hedging devices with different point of view. This study used qualitative methods in analyzing the data. The source data of this study is a novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, entitled Sherlock Holmes and its translation. Hedging devices found in this study were 96 data. Those data were translated using modulation technique. 96 data were divided into four such as, adaptors 66 data, rounders 6 data, plausibility shields 17 data and attribution shields 7 data. By using modulation technique translator translate those hedging devices with different hedging devices in the target language, but the function of the hedging devices are similar with the hedging devices of the source language.

Abstract

Background: This study is intended to find out the patterns of CR used in developing phases and stages of narrative and their implication in the genre-based model of language teaching of narratives. The study uses 15 different narratives from two nationally recognized Junior High School English books published by Intan Pariwara and Tiga Serangkai as data sources. Methodology: The narratives are analysed based on their functional engagements of phases and rhetorical functions of stages. Then, the patterns of CR in each phase and stage of the narratives are identified in terms of their types, meanings and roles to develop the phases and stages of narratives. Findings: The findings indicate that the logic of space of external addition and internal similar comparison are used in describing Character, Setting, and Activity in Orientation. Meanwhile, the combination of logic of space and time of external different comparison, external successive time and cause consequence are mainly used to develop phases of Introducing Problem, Developing Problems to Climax in Complication, Evaluation, and phases of Effort 1 to N, Problem Solved in Resolution. Coda, finally, applies internal similar comparison and external successive time to make comments and extract the value of the story. Conclusion: The intricate patterns of CR used in different phases and stages of narrative should be taught delicately in guided and scaffolded instructions through four stages of genre-based model of teaching, namely, BKOF, Modelling, JCT and ICT. Originality: This area of research is under widespread scrutiny and investigation especially conjunctive relationship in each step and phase, as well as the instructional implications of narrative texts.

Abstract

Abstract. Being the kernel of persuasive devices in a speech, methods and strategies of repertoire rhetoric ascertain the objective of the persuasion. They are unique and their exertion in an individual doing the persuasion may differ from one to another. This paper attempts to reveal the use of methods and strategies of repertoire rhetoric in the presidential inauguration speech of Barack Obama and Donald Trump. The objectives of the study cover the categorization of the strategies and methods of repertoire rhetoric employed by each of them and compare their strategies and methods of rhetoric to unravel the effectiveness of the persuasion in their presidential inauguration speech. This study is based on the qualitative paradigm resorting to multiple case study model. The sampling of data and data source are purposive. The research method implemented the principles of ethnography in terms of data collection and data analysis. The result of the study shows that both Obama and Trump resort to three different methods of rhetoric, with the same propensity towards pathos method. However, it is also found that Obama’s use of logos is almost as high as his use of pathos, leaving Trump’s logos far behind. Even so, the finding of Trump also resorting to logos is contradictory with the common and media belief that Trump solely employs pathos method in all of his remarks. In terms of strategies of rhetoric, both utilize a wide range of options with Obama tending to use syntactic devices and Trump opting for repetition mostly as expected. Keywords: repertoire rhetoric method, repertoire rhetoric strategies, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, presidential inauguration speechAbstrak.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to evaluate whether the activities of two nationally-recognized English textbooks satisfy the GBA (Genre-Based Approach) and the three aspects of national curriculum, involving knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The data of the research rely on the learning-teaching activities in the two English textbooks used in Class VII, VIII, and IX of Junior High Schools in Indonesia. The sources of data are taken purposively to find five different genres involving description, recount, procedure, narrative, and report. The bases of the evaluation of the book activities are derived from GBA teaching and learning processes which include the completeness, appropriate sequence, and the ampleness of the activities in satisfying the integrations of the three aspects of the national curriculum, GBA activities and language levels activities as realized in general activities. The findings indicate that the activities in the two books can be classified into two patterns. Pattern 1, in general, satisfies the completeness of the GBA and three language levels activities. However, they lack of the appropriate sequences and ampleness of the GBA and language levels and therefore, they miss the integration of the three aspects of curriculum. Pattern 2 do not satisfy all of the three bases of evaluation including completeness, appropriate sequence and ampleness of GBA and language levels activities. Therefore, the activities of the two textbooks need to be redesigned according to the integration of the three aspects of the national curriculum and the completeness, appropriate sequence, and ampleness of the GBA and language levels activities.
