Abstract

The Suroan tradition is a local Javanese cultural practice that continues to be preserved in Bumiasri Hamlet, Bumiharjo Village, Batanghari District, East Lampung Regency, Indonesia. Beyond its cultural significance, the tradition incorporates Islamic religious values that are reflected in various communal and religious activities. This study aims to analyze the process of internalizing Islamic values and to examine the community’s understanding and lived experience of aqidah (faith), ibadah (worship), and akhlak (moral conduct) within the Suroan tradition. Employing a qualitative field research approach, the study involved village officials, Islamic religious leaders, community leaders, and local residents. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that the Suroan tradition has undergone a transformation in meaning, evolving from a predominantly cultural practice into an effective form of cultural da'wah that facilitates the transmission and internalization of Islamic values. The internalization process occurs gradually through habituation, exemplary behavior, and active community participation in religious activities. Aqidah is internalized through the reinforcement of monotheistic beliefs in communal prayers; ibadah through the regular practice of tahlilan, charitable giving, and religious study; and akhlak through mutual cooperation, social solidarity, and ukhuwah Islamiyah (Islamic brotherhood). The community not only understands Suroan as a cultural tradition but also experiences it as a religious practice that provides spiritual tranquility and strengthens religious awareness. This internalization of Islamic values contributes to changes in the community’s religious and social behavior in everyday life. Thus, the Suroan tradition demonstrates its potential as a means of harmonizing Islamic teachings with local culture while fostering religious character and strengthening social harmony within the community.
