Abstract

This study examined how SambaSunda constructed the meaning of cultural hybridity through their performance of "Bangbung Hideung." Using Keir Elam's theory of theatrical semiotics, the study analyzed three main sign systems: stage and instruments, body (costumes, dance movements, expressions, and audience interaction), and the relationship between melancholic lyrics and joyful performance, including audience participation. Through close observation and screenshot documentation of the YouTube performance video, the findings revealed that the performance constructed hybridity through four stages: acknowledgment of Sundanese roots, introduction of modern elements, negotiation and dialogue, and celebration through audience participation. The contrast between lyrics depicting darkness and suffering and the festive performance produced a cathartic effect, as the audience did not respond with sadness but instead joined the performers in dancing on stage. The performance therefore represents Sundanese cultural identity as dynamic, adaptive, and open to contemporary influences.
